China Life Pension Company is a management organization that offers a range of pension and annuity services for customers across China. To stand out from a growing list of competitors, the organization sought to improve customer service through better business processes and team collaboration. To meet these needs, China Life Pension Company implemented Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 data management software and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. The company now has integrated data from disparate sources, so employees use updated information for decision making. Employees from different teams collaborate more easily through a unified reporting and analysis process. Users are also boosting efficiency by creating statistical analysis reports more quickly and sharing business process information through an enterprise portal. Situation

The organization managed a total of 4.716 billion yuan (U.S.$690 million) in pension fees and assets from January to October 2009. During that same period, the company added 228,800 new customer accounts. With these numbers, the company ranks among the industry’s top pension managers.
China Life Pension Company maintains an internal information management system designed to automate statistical analysis, provide high-efficiency business process management, and optimize employee decision making. Because the company recognizes that customer satisfaction is essential for business growth, it is dedicated to meeting its customers’ needs through high efficiency. For the past three years, the organization has managed a comprehensive business process management solution that covers each step of the customer order process. These steps include signing a contract, opening the account, allocating funds, making payments, and distributing investments.
Recently, China Life Pension Company has faced increased competition from 37 other companies in the enterprise pension market. Because of this rapidly expanding field of competitors, there was increasing pressure to have even more efficient business processes at all stages.
Also, because business processes at China Life Pension Company often involve different departments—such as business development, trustee, account management, and operations—collaboration had become increasingly critical. The company’s employees also needed to collaborate with investment management companies and other external institutions in order to complete projects.
For China Life Pension Company, being able to conduct business in an orderly and highly efficient manner, while improving internal and external collaboration, had become the keys to providing good customer service and guaranteeing the best interests of beneficiaries.
To meet these challenges, the company became interested in implementing a new enterprise database system and business intelligence solution that would make use of the latest technology. The IT department specifically sought a solution that would provide improved statistical analysis, better decision-making support, and enhanced cross-department business process management.
In the area of statistical analysis, the company required a solution that would automatically export more than 100 pages of financial and sales reports and ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data. The data export process involves operations such as cross-calculation and the aggregation of several hundred thousand data pieces from different sources. Integrity, accuracy, system computing performance, and data organization are critical for this process to succeed.
For optimal analysis support, China Life Pension Company sought a system that would be easy for salespeople to use and could efficiently analyze market and customer data. The company needed to give its employees fast data inquiry and flexible analysis capabilities, so they could quickly obtain the best decision-making data.
In terms of business process management, the company needed a solution that would connect its three major business lines and nine business management departments. It wanted to integrate multiple examination and approval processes to provide uniform operation and analysis to managers, examination and verification personnel, and other employees.
“We needed to connect the various departments throughout the business process,” says Shen Bin, Manager of Development, Information Technology, China Life Pension Company. “We also had to be able to circulate business data, such as customer and project information sheets and operation records, in an accurate, punctual, and safe manner so we could make internal collaboration highly efficient.”Solution
When it began looking for a new database system and business intelligence solution, China Life Pension Company initially evaluated technologies from several different vendors. The company considered factors such as the potential solution’s ability to integrate well with the existing China Life Pension Company IT environment, which is based on Microsoft software. “An end-to-end integrated solution would help us avoid a lot of development work,” says Bin.

The company eventually concluded that Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise data management software and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 were the right products. It began implementing the new solution in June 2009.
China Life Pension Company was especially interested in new geospatial visualization and other reporting features in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services, which employees can use to easily develop and share business intelligence reports. Workers can create more in-depth reports with new mapping and custom shape creation features in Report Builder 3.0 and SQL Server 2008 R2 Business Intelligence Development Studio, a development environment based on Microsoft Visual Studio that aids in the creation of BI solutions.
Additionally, China Life Pension Company was interested in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Integration Services, which helps integrate data and workflow applications.
Finally, the company knew it could improve overall collaboration by deploying Office SharePoint Server 2007, through which employees can publish and share important project information and customer data. Benefits
By using SQL Server 2008 R2 and Office SharePoint Server 2007, China Life Pension Company employees can access integrated customer data from multiple sources and can collaborate more easily on customer projects. The new solution also helps streamline key business processes and gives employees new analytical functionality. The company is saving time on reporting processes, and the IT department will be able to provide more IT services in the future.
With its new solution, China Life Pension Company can now integrate data from disparate sources. For example, data from different customer files and business systems such as trustee and account management, human resources, and fixed assets management has been organized and stored according to decision making and analytical needs. This process, which is automated through SQL Server 2008 R2 Integration Services, ensures that China Life Pension Company employees receive complete, updated data.
Using SQL Server 2008 R2, China Life Pension Company is also able to have access to larger amounts of data. “More data has been obtained and stored in our SQL Server 2008 R2 database, and it can be accessed at any time for decision-making analysis,” says Bin.
Increases Team Collaboration
China Life Pension Company now has a unified reporting and analysis process, which helps improve overall collaboration for employees. Workers can create statistical analysis reports with SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services and share those reports in an Office SharePoint Server 2007 portal. From there, other employees can download these reports and other shared customer documents.
Now, project data about information collection, circulation, analysis, examination and verification, and inquiry is completed and shared through the Office SharePoint Server 2007 enterprise portal. As a result, personnel in all nine of the company’s business departments can view overall project progress and automatically receive reminders of outstanding issues needing to be resolved. These employees can also obtain results of the specific examination and verification records within the scope of their respective permissions.
Streamlines Processes, Enhances Analytical Capabilities
The new solution helps streamline critical business processes for China Life Pension Company. For instance, once basic information about a prospective customer is entered into the database, salespeople in all departments can preview reports in SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services. Salespeople can now create and share reports that cover each step in the process, including making customer visits, starting a bid plan, examining the plan, signing the contract, and making scheduled payments.
In addition, the solution gives China Life Pension Company new in-depth analytical capabilities. Using the geospatial visualization features in SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services, employees can create analytical models and develop statistical analysis reports more easily. “The new streamlined processes and statistical analysis functions in SQL Server 2008 R2 have saved us a lot of valuable time,” says Bin. “Now, business reports can be automatically generated and submitted both internally and to external supervision and control institutions such as the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics and the China Insurance Regulatory Commission. Everything is much more efficient.”
Extends Value of IT Services
The IT department at China Life Pension Company plans to build on the company’s new solution to extend the value of IT services. “In the future, China Life Pension Company plans to further optimize and extend our system capacity,” says Wang Cuifang, Deputy General Manager, Trustee Management Department, China Life Pension Company.
Specifically, IT staff will integrate more advanced information processing into the company’s business processes. For example, they will enhance report delivery functionality so statistical analysis results such as customer reconciliation sheets and investment reports can be generated online. The IT department also plans to connect the company’s investment management system with the online banking fund management system, extend the scope of data analysis, and expand overall decision-making capabilities.
