Financial solutions provider Fiserv sought to further increase the value provided by its Corillian Business Online solution. By developing its newest major version to run on Windows Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, the company
increased performance and scalability, delivered compelling new features, and improved deployment and administration—all of which are helping Fiserv customers reduce costs and increase profitability.
Fiserv provides financial services technology solutions to thousands of customers worldwide—including industry leaders such as U.S. Bank, Tesco Bank, and Westpac Bank. The company’s Corillian platform (formerly called Voyager), which supports retail
and online banking solutions, is designed to help financial institutions achieve a sustainable competitive advantage through the deployment of customized online banking services.
One solution in the Corillian suite is Corillian Business Online, a set of online banking and money movement services for businesses. Developed in 2007, version 3.2.5 of Corillian Business Online was a 32-bit application designed for the Windows Server 2003
operating system and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database management software.
In planning for Corillian Business Online 4.0, Fiserv established the following goals:
Greater performance and scalability. Fiserv sought to fully transition to a 64-bit architecture, in order to eliminate transaction processing bottlenecks that were in the 32-bit version.
Lower ownership costs. Fiserv wanted to reduce the Corillian platform’s total cost of ownership (TCO) through greater ease of deployment and management, and by supporting virtualization and consolidation onto fewer, more powerful 64-bit
New functionality. Fiserv wanted to provide a richer and more compelling user experience, new features to help deepen the relationship between the user and the financial institution, and new ways to cross-sell, up-sell, and increase user
To accomplish its goals, Fiserv developed Corillian Business Online 4.0 to run on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. The 64-bit application is based on the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 and was developed using
the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate development system. Notable improvements and new features include:

New customer segmentation features.
Replacement of the proprietary report manager in Corillian Business Online 3.2.5 with a new reporting engine based on SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services.
Use of Transparent Data Encryption in SQL Server 2008 R2 to improve performance while supporting Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS).
A single, unified installer based on the Windows PowerShell command line interface, which replaces the 14 separate installation packages for Corillian Business Online 3.2.5.
Support for leading virtualization technologies, such as Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 R2.
After it finished development, Fiserv took Corillian Business Online 4.0 to a Microsoft lab to benchmark and optimize its performance. Running on four quad-core web servers, four quad-core database servers, and one eight-core database server, the application
proved capable of supporting 1,500 concurrent users.
By developing Corillian Business Online 4.0 to run on Windows Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 and working with Microsoft to optimize the solution, Fiserv has benefited in several ways:
Improved performance and scalability. With Corillian Business Online 3.2.5, the heaviest load successfully applied during testing was 500 concurrent users. In comparison, Corillian Business Online 4.0 can support a heavier concurrent user
load—with improved page response times of more than 200 percent in some areas.
Compelling new features. Fiserv used the latest Microsoft software to deliver many of the new features in Corillian Business Online 4.0, such as its AJAX-based user interface. “We used AJAX to deliver enhanced functionality that was previously
deemed impossible, such as a landing page that asynchronously loads and displays data from a number of sources,” says Mike Lader, Product Development Director at Fiserv. “Similarly, we built on SQL Server Reporting Services to deliver more flexible queries
and more output options.”
Improved deployment and administration. Because it is a 64-bit solution, Corillian Business Online 4.0 can support the same number of users with less hardware than Corillian Business Online 3.2.5. The new role-based installer
has reduced installation times from hours to minutes. And customers can manage Corillian Business Online 4.0 deployments using the same processes and skills they use to manage other elements of their up-to-date IT infrastructures.
Lower TCO and improved ROI. While improved performance and manageability help Fiserv customers reduce the cost of running Corillian Business Online 4.0, its new features help them increase profitability. For example, new customer segmentation
features enable Fiserv customers to target their own customers with the most appropriate value-added products and services. ”By building Corillian Business Online 4.0 on the latest Microsoft platform and taking advantage of the .NET Framework, we’re delivering
a business banking platform that helps Fiserv customers both reduce their cost of ownership and increase profitability,” says Scott Hess, Vice President of Consulting and Innovation at Fiserv’s Digital Channels division.
