Samsung Electronics sought an advanced cloud solution for its IT infrastructure so that it could provide better quality for its Smart TV services. It decided to deploy Windows Azure to diversify its cloud computing environment under a multivendor
system. Since implementing Windows Azure, it has increased reliability, simplified development efforts, and reduced costs by 80 percent.

Samsung created a portal for a variety of content and services, which culminated in the unveiling of a Smart TV app store in 2010 that offered more than 1,400 apps.

Building an IT infrastructure for Smart TV services was challenging because providers traditionally had to accommodate traffic increases with more servers, storage, and infrastructure support. For this reason, the company began using cloud solutions in 2008.
After using cloud services successfully, Samsung again started looking for alternative cloud solutions at the end of 2010. To meet the need for ongoing, reliable service and to support continued expansion into the Smart TV services market, Samsung needed
to implement a more advanced IT infrastructure.

In early 2011, Samsung Electronics expressed an interest in Windows Azure, the Microsoft cloud services development, hosting, and management environment. Windows Azure provides on-demand compute, storage, networking, and content delivery capabilities
through Microsoft data centers around the world.
Over a two-month period, Samsung moved components to its network, where all systems were carefully reviewed in detail, and then migrated the diverse systems that support Smart TV services to Windows Azure. Development work was done using the Microsoft Visual
Studio 2010 Professional development system. Samsung was pleased with the rapid pace of migrating its diverse systems to Windows Azure.
The company worked with Premier Field Engineers from Microsoft Services, first to optimize the stability and performance of its network, then to optimize the performance and capacity of the cloud resources.
Finally, Samsung loaded the updated system directly onto its service network and verified stability and performance. Formal provision of some of the Smart TV systems through Windows Azure began in October 2011.
By using Windows Azure to build and deliver key components of its Smart TV systems, Samsung Electronics has reduced hardware and maintenance costs by up to 80 percent, compared with using a traditional on-premises infrastructure. Productivity has improved
now that staff can complete in seconds tasks that used to take days or months. The company is better positioned to focus on delivering high-quality software and services and continuing to grow in the competitive Smart TV market.
Increased Reliability, Better Service
Because its Smart TV systems provide services in 120 countries, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, if a system failure occurs, the impact can be felt across the world due to time differences. This makes reliability the most critical factor for the IT infrastructure
Since moving to Windows Azure, the company has experienced better quality of its services. Samsung attributes this success to the scalability of its IT infrastructure, including Windows Azure, which provides smooth, fast service.
Reduced IT Costs
The company avoided significant hardware and maintenance costs by not having to make a large in-house infrastructure investment. The simulation conducted by the Visual Display Business Division at Samsung showed that Samsung reduced costs up to 80 percent
by using Windows Azure.
The need to bring in equipment, set up one server at a time, and then install software on them has decreased. Beyond that, it is now possible to address emergency expansion needs at a developer’s desk, which also saves money.
Less IT Management Time
By using Windows Azure, Samsung has decreased IT maintenance time. Staff report that productivity has greatly improved since working with Windows Azure. They are able to install applications without needing to visit a remote site. If a system needs to
be expanded quickly, staff can add the resources right away with a click of the mouse.
The cloud service previously adopted by Samsung was managed on-premises, which meant that system operation and management had to be handled by the company. By using Windows Azure, developers now can easily upload services to the cloud environment immediately
after they finish development. Developers have also eliminated extra management effort because software management is done in the cloud as soon as developers upload their code from Visual Studio.

Greater Competitive Edge
Samsung now can focus on the growth of its business rather than dealing with problem-solving. “Samsung is taking advantage of the unique capabilities of Windows Azure. It plans to use Windows Azure to contribute to further enhancing its competitiveness
in the Smart TV market,” says Jeong-Soo Hwang, Enterprise and Partner Group Director at Microsoft Korea.
