Metito, located in Dubai, creates and implements state-of-the-art water treatment technologies for customers across the world. When the company moved into a new headquarters complex several years ago, it sought a new technology solution that would bring together its telephony and messaging environments and also give employees integrated tools for better communication and collaboration. Metito also wanted a solution that would be environmentally friendly. In January 2008, the company began deploying a unified communications solution that features Microsoft® Office Communications Server 2007 and the Nortel CS1000 IP Private Branch Exchange (PBX) phone system. This group of technologies integrates the Metito IP telephony and e-mail messaging systems. The solution has also helped workers communicate better and be more productive in their daily work.
Based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Metito is a global leader in the design and supply of water/wastewater treatment and water desalination systems. Founded in 1958, Metito operates in nine countries in the Middle East and has installed more than 1,000 systems throughout the world.

Several years ago, Metito moved into a new corporate headquarters in the Dubai Technology Park. That move gave the organization an opportunity to upgrade its

outdated communications and telephony infrastructures. When it came time to evaluate new technology solutions for the upgrade, Metito wanted to make sure it implemented technology that simplified its IT operations.
The company also wanted to give the 60 employees in this new office better communication and collaboration tools, and the ability to have one integrated solution that provided e-mail, instant messaging, video conferencing, and wireless telephony functionality.
Additionally, Metito wanted to make sure that any new solution would match the organization’s concern for the environment. “Because we are located in one of the leading green buildings in the Middle East, we were looking for environmentally friendly and energy-efficient products to deploy,” says Naseem Ul Haq Zaki, Chief Information Officer, Metito.
Metito determined that the best solution for its business needs was a unified communications solution that combines Nortel and Microsoft® products. “We decided to deploy Nortel because of its Innovative Communications Alliance with Microsoft, which provides simple integration of unified communications with our existing business processes,” says Ul Haq Zaki. ”We found that the seamless integration of Nortel and Microsoft solutions provide a unified communications solution that is just not available from any other technology provider.”
In January 2008, Metito implemented a data network built on Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 8300s and Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 5520s. It then deployed the Nortel Converged Office for Communication Server 1000 solution, which integrates the Nortel CS1000 IP Private Branch Exchange (PBX) phone system with Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007. It also includes Nortel IP handsets. The Converged Office for Communication Server 1000 solution was developed as part of the Nortel and Microsoft ICA.
Metito also deployed the Nortel WLAN 2300 portfolio for wireless connectivity, which gives employees the ability to access corporate data from any location.
The new solution gives Metito employees integrated access to wireless telephony, e-mail, instant messaging, and video conferencing—all from within the Office Communicator 2007 client. These workers can now access and share important business information anywhere inside the company’s Dubai Technology Park office complex, whether they are using their computer, a mobile device, or a smartphone.
Metito employees can also use presence capabilities in Office Communications Server 2007 to view another employee’s online status.
“Working with Nortel, we have created an optimized unified communications network that’s simple to manage and capable of supporting new services as we need them,” says Ul Haq Zaki. “The initial network is already serving 60 employees and is capable of supporting more than 400 people as our communications needs evolve.”
With its new Nortel and Microsoft technologies, Metito has given its 60 headquarters employees a unified communications solution that brings together IP telephony and messaging environments.
Metito employees can collaborate in real time through simple one-click access to e-mail, instant messaging, video conferencing, and wireless communications. They can also use the presence feature in Office Communications Server 2007 to see if colleagues are available online.
Because of these new communication and collaboration capabilities, employees no longer waste time leaving phone messages and waiting for responses from their colleagues. As a result, employee communication overall has improved and productivity has increased.
The Nortel products and services that are contained in the new Metito solution will also make it possible for the organization to be more energy efficient while reducing its carbon footprint. The Nortel Power over Ethernet switches, for example, have been recognized by Tolly Group as the industry’s “greenest.” Also, Nortel provides software tools such as the Energy Efficiency and Telepresence Return on Investment Calculator, which can help IT professionals reduce network energy consumption by up to 50 percent.
“For Metito, global success depends on having great products and services, maximizing operational efficiency, and driving employee productivity,” says Ramin Attari, Vice President, Nortel Middle East. “Recent studies show that unified communications can boost corporate productivity by up to 18 percent and lead to a return on investment of up to 250 percent. These are the kinds of business benefits that ensure that a company like ours can maximize return on investment through technology that also ensures the longest possible solution life cycle.”
