The IT employees of Aurobindo Pharma faced challenges in managing issues related to the applications and desktops that the company supported across its 10 sites. The company had no standard way to resolve desktop system failures, which resulted in increased downtimes, decreased productivity, and even data loss. Laborious deployments and extremely time-consuming upgrades required restarts, causing downtime for users. To simplify its existing environment and accelerate workstation recovery, the company deployed the Microsoft® Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset. Now, Aurobindo Pharma is realizing improved employee productivity and significantly reduced help-desk and IT administration costs.
Aurobindo Pharma is among the largest pharmaceutical companies in India, with a robust product portfolio spread over major product areas. Working with a small, highly committed group of professionals, P.V. Ramaprasad Reddy and K. Nityananda Reddy founded the company in 1986. It commenced operations in 1988 with a single unit that manufactured several types of semi-synthetic penicillin at Pondicherry, India.
Aurobindo Pharma became a public venture in 1992, and today the company has a global presence with its own infrastructure, subsidiaries, strategic alliances, and joint ventures. The company is the market leader in semi-synthetic penicillin drugs, with a presence in other key therapeutic segments such as cephalosporins, antivirals, CNS, cardio-vascular, and gastroenterology.
Over the years, Aurobindo Pharma has evolved into a knowledge-driven company. It is research and development–focused, has a multiproduct portfolio with multicountry manufacturing facilities, and is establishing marketing initiatives across the world.
Aurobindo Pharma has operations spread across 10 sites, but the company had no standard way to resolve system failures on employees’ personal computers, which run the Windows® XP operating system. Most of the time, when a computer failed, IT staff would format the unusable system and rebuild the operating system. It often took more than three hours to install the operating system along with the necessary applications. In some instances, locally stored data would be lost when IT tried to format a failed computer.
Time-consuming deployments and upgrades of applications also often required restarts, causing additional downtime for users. The situation also consumed significant IT staff time, which resulted in slower responses to other issues in the organization and sometimes demanded a headcount increase.
Aurobindo Pharma realized that it needed a more efficient and reliable way to resolve desktop failures. The company wanted to reduce costs by developing a plan and a system to accelerate workstation recovery and enhance employee productivity.
“The existing environment caused many difficulties and efficiency losses,” says Ram Reddy P, Manager of IT at Aurobindo Pharma. “We needed a plan to reduce cost and complexity by deploying a common standard.”
To help standardize its IT environment, Aurobindo Pharma decided to use the Microsoft® Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset, a core component of the Desktop Optimization Pack for Software Assurance, which is a suite of advanced technologies designed to improve desktop manageability and security, and decrease total cost of ownership.

“We were looking for a cost-effective and flexible Windows desktop management solution,” says Mahesh Kumar Pinnamaneni,
CIO at Aurobindo Pharma. “Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset was the right choice. It provided powerful tools to accelerate desktop repair.”
Using the powerful, intuitive tools in the Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset, administrators now can recover PCs that have become unusable, and easily identify the root causes of system and network problems. If a desktop catastrophe does occur, IT can quickly repair unstartable or locked-out systems, restore lost files without using backup or reinstalling the operating system, detect and remove malware that utilizes root kits to avoid detection, and perform many other recovery and repair tasks.
Aurobindo Pharma employees now have a set of tools that they can use to start the system and repair startup failures, connect to network and backup data, and view event logs. With the ERD Commander feature, users can start unresponsive systems in a repair environment similar to the familiar Windows interface. IT staff can determine the most likely cause of a crash with the Crash Analyzer, and use System Restore to safely remove changes that could be causing the system to malfunction.
With the Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset, Aurobindo Pharma can manage the operating system and applications in its desktop computer environment more effectively, thereby saving time and reducing the challenges associated with troubleshooting and repairing system failures. IT staff at Aurobindo Pharma can use the solution to accelerate system recovery and increase manageability of the company’s desktop computers.
“Our new environment will result in a higher level of efficiency for the whole organization,” says Ram Reddy P.

Gained Rapid Recovery for Increased User Productivity
IT administrators now have many options for recovery, even when Windows Safe Mode or normal startup will not function. With the easy-to-use, offline startup environment, the IT team can quickly restart computers, recover deleted files, and remove malware from infected systems while the computer is offline. This helps protect other computers on the network and reduces the amount of time the computer is unavailable.
“The toolset helps our IT team make PCs safer to use, keep employees productive, and build desktops that are much easier and less expensive to manage,” says Ram Reddy P. “Downtime is also reduced, as the toolset’s flexibility results in systems returning to normal function faster.”
Accelerated Help-Desk Responsiveness
With the features and capabilities in the Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset such as ERD Commander, Crash Analyzer, and System Restore, IT professionals at Aurobindo Pharma can reduce the time and complexity associated with troubleshooting employees’ personal computers.
If a computer crashes, if a system becomes unresponsive, or if changes to a computer cause the system to malfunction, IT help staff can quickly respond to and resolve user issues.
Reduced Costs by 10 Percent
Using the Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset, the IT staff are able to work more quickly and simplify help-desk support, which reduces overall support costs as well as lost productivity caused by downtime.
“We used to experience a substantial number of crashes and the cost of not having an effective diagnostics and recovery plan in place was devastating,” says Ram Reddy P. “All of this has been resolved and we reduced overall costs by 10 percent by using a unified tool suite.”
