Yellow-B was founded in 2000 by a group of developers who had been working together on Java projects since 1998. The company is based in Epalinges, near Lausanne in Switzerland, 40 miles from Geneva airport. The company specializes in Java development, both on a client and a server level.. After a number of projects, it developed JET (Java Enabling Technology), a J2EE compliant development framework that addresses issues around the complexity of application development, integration to legacy systems and the reduction of system maintenance. JET has progressively expanded to provide the backbone for server, client and standalone applications on J2EE, J2SE and J2ME. With JET project control, Yellow-B has a system to develop and maintain projects of every size and description. In addition to major development projects for Orange, one of Europe’s largest telecom companies, Yellow-B has tackled a web-based e-voting solution for the Swiss government and a comprehensive state administrative Web site. This Swiss administrative site handles items from license renewals to driving test appointments, negotiating tax payment deadlines, and land ownership. Yellow-B is also involved in the creation of the British Horse Riding Federation site as part of the 2012 Olympics in London. What tends to be the common factor in all of these solutions is a hodge-podge of entrenched legacy systems from which Yellow-B has shaped powerful web solutions. While Yellow-B is clearly an expert in developing software solutions, it has also become an expert in judging improvements in speed when interacting with a computer. According to Ian Griffiths, chief executive officer, it is often not fast enough. "Almost every business, especially consultants, want to be more efficient. In fact, because we build software for a living, we get annoyed at having to wait on the computer. We are very sensitive to small amounts of time either on the plus or the minus side."
This functionality enables the Yellow-B team to find any type of file found anywhere on local drives, network and the Internet. Searches are deeper and more comprehensive.
Problem Steps Recorder
Problem Steps Recorder allows the Yellow-B staff to precisely capture and communicate a computer problem. It also enables staff to document fixes, create tutorials or knowledge-based reference materials for customers.
The Windows 7 Aero Snap feature allows Yellow-B users side-by-side window viewing by dragging windows to borders, left and right. Grab and shake the foremost screen to make all other screens disappear. The Peek feature is invoked by clicking the lower right hand Show Desktop rectangle. The desktop is immediately visible to view gadgets and other desktop icons.
Features like Pinning and Jump Lists, accessed conveniently from the taskbar, streamline document navigation. Yellow-B users have their files more readily available.
Trigger Start Services
The more background services in the system, the more resources they consume – memory utilization, I/O and CPU, as well as having an adverse effect on power consumption. Trigger-Start Services is a new mechanism in Windows 7 that fires up an applications’ service, such as a webcam software update or the availability of an IP address, in a more efficient manner. Windows 7 consolidates or batches service requests to more efficiently use computer resources.
Finding Errant Files Faster
Wasting time finding just the right file is one of the most frequent and time-consuming tasks for Yellow-B staff. Griffiths frames this common problem well, "I don't always name or save a file in a perfect way, so it's easy to lose track of where the file was put on the drive. Federated Search fixes this problem. Being perfectly organized no longer matters."
Sold On OS Migration
||If you took my Windows 7 computer away from me right now, I’d be very upset. I’ve made the full commitment in terms of files and documents and I really like the 20 percent boost in productivity.
Chief Operations Officer, Yellow-B
After using the operating system (Windows XP) that came with its three year old computers, Yellow-B is ready to make a move."Because we bought our computers three years ago with Windows XP on them, we never even considered migrating to Windows Vista. However, with great early experiences with Windows 7 and the need for new hardware, we'll confidently make the move."
Faster Problem Resolution
Features that are helping solve problems for Yellow-B are Problem Steps Recorder, Location Aware Printing and Network Connection Wizard. All three speed workflow. According to Griffiths, "Problem Steps Recorder could be very helpful for our customers who are trying to communicate specific software problems they are having. Without a tool like this, we waste a lot of time." "I've been known to accidentally print to a printer that is 20 miles away. Location Aware Printing is a very nice convenience that stops that from happening. It will save a little paper and a lot of frustration." “On our Windows XP machines, getting connected to a network wasted a lot of time. If you moved across several networks, the problem compounded. Network Connection Wizard now makes it easy."
Faster Boot, Resume, Navigation
Griffiths represents a typical expert computer professional that easily becomes frustrated with having to wait on a computer, but immediately appreciates improvements in speed. "Windows 7 gives you back little bits of time throughout the day that really amount to something. Navigation features like Snap, Peek, Hover and Shake are simple, but significant time-savers.” "The Trigger Start Services technology under the hood of Windows 7 also speeds boot and resume time. It means we can get to work sooner whether we're at home, office or the customer."
Productivity Boosted 20 Percent
Evidently Windows 7 has found a new fan in Ian Griffiths. "If you took my Windows 7 computer away from me right now, I'd be very upset. I've made the full commitment in terms of files and documents, and I really like the 20 percent boost in productivity."
