Manupatra Information Solutions is the fastest growing company in law publishing and is reckoned to be the pioneers in online legal research in India. The company started operations in 2000 and launched its flagship product, the online databasewww.manupatra.com in August 2001. NXT, the content management software from NextPage was used to launch this service. However, over the last 10 years, not only has the number of users increased to 5000, the data size has massively increased to around 100 GB with index size up to 300/400 GB. Access to the vast online database has made research exhaustive and extensive as it spans different geographies. “The sheer amount of information was daunting and we started experiencing limitations with our existing software,” says Deepak Kapoor, CEO, Manupatra.

NXT had limits on the number of collections and the data size. In addition, search performance and speed was inadequate. Any search that was being made on a larger subset of data, such as searching on more than one collection, was slowing down the performance. Apart from that, the solution did not offer many basic features such as, did you mean, synonym, custom relevancy tuning, faceted search, navigators, taxonomy, and connectors. “NXT was designed to handle a fewer number of concurrent users and a limited data size,” explains Shyamjee Sudhakar, Technical Lead, Manupatra. “Queries across a large volume of content were taking more time and impacting the efficiency of the system.”

With the Indian user market maturing, the demands of users for more refined and cutting-edge features were also increasing. “As user expectations were increasing, there was a pressing need for better search refinement,” says Deepak Kapoor. “We decided to implement a new enterprise search solution that would make the lives of our users easier, enhance information management, and ultimately lead to better, more informed decision-making.”


Manupatra evaluated a variety of search technologies measuring the functional, technical, and business features of these systems against criteria. It also evaluated Microsoft FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint. Manupatra took advantage of several ease-of-use features in FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint to speed information search. The company used the relevancy tuning capabilities in FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint to optimize the relevance model and create additional relevance profiles that users can use to sort results according to their specific search needs. It also improved its search capability, which increased search usage substantially and also led to higher user satisfaction. Manupatra users can use the synonym features of FAST Search Server to find information without coming up with every possible variation. In addition, the company has been able to ‘Googlize’ legal research. The search engine offers simple and intuitive solutions with options of single box search, field search, and advanced search, using Boolean logic.

The search engine has a fully customizable indexing pipeline. This makes it easy to determine which components should be added to a pipeline, including the ones added via scripts. Multiple indexing pipelines can also be defined. Overall, the FAST indexing pipeline architecture gives great control over the indexing process.

Additionally, it supports many different kinds of document types and document attachments. The contextual search, relevancy and navigators take the users to the desired document in one go. FAST ESP quickly returns answers to questions, not references to them, and does so in a much more tightly controlled scope with a greater awareness of surrounding context to drastically improve accuracy. “It's able to handle very large documents as well as huge amounts of data,” explains Shyamjee Sudhakar. “Plus it’s great at inferring hidden relationships based on content and metadata. The scale-up and scale-out facilities of FAST are quite good.”

FAST ESP supports text search in all Unicode languages including Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, and Kannada. As Manupatra covers judgments of various courts in which some parts may appear in vernacular language, searching the same becomes easily possible.

FAST ESP connects to more structured, unstructured, and rich media sources, supports more platforms, understands more languages, and adapts more exactly to the environment than any other search technology. And with the holistic management view from the Search Business Center (SBC), FAST ESP is very easy to use and tuned to business priorities.

Users can search globally, without having to select the database where they have to search. Alternately, for specific searches, an option to identify and mark the database is available. The global search option is greatly appreciated since the user does not have to define where to search.

Performance has improved dramatically. The relevancy of results on queries has increased and renewal rates are up by 12–13 percent. The solution went live in August 2011 and the entire investment was recovered in just a year.

Improves Management, Increases Efficiency

The new search function has become a tool for continual site management. Users no longer have to visit multiple systems and conduct numerous searches to find information. For instance, if a lawyer needs case laws, he inputs the same in the search box, without specifying the location of search. The results displayed can then be filtered through the navigators. The lawyer can view the collection based on importance or he can chronologically make the selection, or use one of the many filters available. The search is run on a single database, which is further filtered and thereafter can be sorted on various parameters depending on the individual user.

The centralization of documents has helped to increase the efficiency of sharing and retrieving documents. Deepak Kapoor says, “Users are more efficient and productive with the new search capability, because they find the information they seek faster.
