Innovative South African Primary School Boosts Student Learning with Video Games
Video Only posted: 07/28/2011

In rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Lakeside Park Primary School uses Microsoft technology to prepare students for the future. Lakeside Park participated in the first pilot program of its type in the world, designed to test the benefits of using a range of Microsoft solutions. Using Kinect for Xbox 360, students play hands-free educational games that use sensors to replicate motion on screen. Teachers also gained much-needed communication, collaboration, and productivity capabilities with Microsoft Live@edu. Windows MultiPoint Server was installed at the school, which gave five users access with monitors to one computer and expanded the limited number of computers available for education. Lakeside Park worked with the Microsoft Partners in Learning education program to train the teachers and school administrators, and has seen remarkable improvement in student numeracy and literacy.

Department of Education Helps Prepare Students for Workforce
4-page Case Study posted: 07/28/2011

The Department of Education of the Philippines (DepEd) is responsible for managing and governing 44,200 schools and 23 million students. DepEd provides students with the foundational education to help them transition to the workforce and become productive citizens. In recent years, DepEd has increased the number of computers in the classroom. To help save money, it deployed OpenOffice.org and the Linux operating system on half of its computers, but school administrators found it difficult to deploy and support computers with open source software. DepEd estimated that computers with Microsoft Office 2010 and the Windows 7 operating system would be 33 percent less expensive to deploy and support. With Office 2010, students are better prepared to join the workforce, teachers save time developing teaching lessons, and school administrators expedite report creation.
