Home to 90 million people, the Punjab province in Pakistan, the sixth most populous country in the world, comprises a range of territories from the densely populated urban cities in Lahore to the most rural areas in Murree and Vehari. The Punjab IT Labs Project is the brainchild of Punjab’s Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif and heralds a ground-breaking era in the region’s education system, establishing more than 4,200 computer labs in all 36 districts of the Punjab. The project team evaluated Microsoft alternatives, including OpenOffice.org and Linux, but chose Microsoft because of the support they knew they would receive. By investing in Microsoft products and using virtualization technology, the Government of the Punjab was able to bring software costs down to 3 million USD from 8 million USD and complete the deployment ahead of schedule in just 110 days.
