Ghim Li Textiles Co. Cuts Travel & Phone Costs, Speeds Time-to-Market with Cloud Conferencing

Business Needs

Singapore knitwear firm, Ghim Li, needed trans-national design and production teams to work closely and at high speed. However, traditional voice-only conferences meant that material had to be couriered internationally for sales discussions, while international audio conferences cost over S$300 [US$ 242] each. To meet tight production and product-cycle deadlines, quality control staff had to frequently travel between offices and factories around Asia.

* In the fast-paced fashion industry, speed is everything. With Lync, our customer response and turnaround times are faster. Now, more customers are making their fashion-based selections with us. *

Timothy Ngui
Chief Information Officer, Ghim Li

Executives wanted to reduce costs and improve collaboration, while making each employee more contactable.

In January 2013, Ghim Li created a single, global telephony and audio-video conferencing platform, with a hybrid implementation of on-premise and cloud-based Microsoft Office 365, with Microsoft Lync. Ghim Li integrated Lync with Microsoft Exchange. This enables staff to assess colleagues’ contactability from their emails, and connect a voice or video call with one click. With desktop videoconferencing, they can also review material samples live, with both parties seeing the same video content.

“We needed a solution that gave us a competitive advantage,” says Timothy Ngui, Chief Information Officer, Ghim Li. Ngui. “With its myriad of content-rich features, Lync delivers all the collaboration benefits within a single system. And with no middleware integration, Lync proved easy to install and maintain across all five offices.”

• Customers can easily connect to employees because calls are routed to wherever the employee is working.
• Better international collaboration has improved response times and speed-to-market.
• With videoconferencing, Ghim Li saves S$50,000 [US$40,000] annually in time and travel costs.
• PBXs in all overseas offices will slowly be decommissioned, saving up to S$10,000 [US$8,000] per country, per annum.
• Ghim Li has passed cost-savings on to customers, improving price competitiveness.
