Since its inception in 2004, JSHOPPERS.com has grown significantly. It carries items from many of the biggest Japanese fashion mail-order companies and food distributors, as well as from artisans from all over the country. In 2009, Navibird Chief Executive Officer Kazuya Yamanaka was chosen as one of the world’s top-30 Internet company managers by Internet business group Alibaba.
JSHOPPERS.com retails entirely online and e-mail is the primary channel of communication with customers. Therefore, the company’s marketing efforts depend heavily on IT and e-mail marketing. However, as the business expanded rapidly, it became clear that the e-mail marketing system they were using was inadequate for the company’s marketing needs.
“The system lacked tracking functions and only allowed English text and titles, which placed constraints on our promotion strategy,” says Yamanaka. “We also lacked the ability to develop business intelligence based on the customer data we collected from e-mail marketing campaigns.”
“In 2009, as our business rapidly increased, we began looking for a new e-mail marketing solution,” says Yamanaka. “We wanted a total solution that would facilitate future business development without needing new software or hardware. It would also have to integrate well with our [Microsoft] Windows platform, making it easier for our IT and marketing staff to get up to speed on it quickly.”
JSHOPPERS.com opted for Radica Intimate (RI), an e-mail marketing solution developed by Radica Systems Limited and built on Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2008. “We were attracted by the multilingual support and the assurances by Radica that the system would significantly boost our delivery rate,” says Yamanaka.
Improved delivery and open rates; “We have been very impressed with RI,” says Andrew Craig, head of e-mail marketing at Navibird. “We are now able to send e-mails in three languages with Japanese, English, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese text and subject lines. Sending e-mails in the languages that our customers prefer helps us to improve our campaigns‘ open rates and increases our brand value. Also, we now have high delivery rates and are able to verify this with the in-depth tracking features that RI provides. The results speak for themselves – since deploying the solution we have experienced a 200% increase in the value of purchase transactions via e-mail campaigns.”
Increased scalability; A significant benefit of RI is that it has allowed JSHOPPERS.com to fully utilize the scalability of SQL Server 2008. “In the first year after implementing the solution we increased our database entries by 100,000 – a 40% increase – and we aim for one million in the next three years,” said Craig. “And despite this rapid expansion, the system has proved to be highly reliable.”

More intuitive user experience; “The integration with a familiar Microsoft environment has not only meant a low learning curve for our IT staff, but members of our marketing team have also benefitted,” says Yamanaka. “The solution is user friendly and our general employees can easily use it for marketing campaigns without the support of IT staff.”
Navibird has plans to further develop their e-mail marketing strategy in the near future with this total solution. “We want to use RI to improve the speed at which we execute our e-mail campaigns,” says Craig. “We hope with the efforts of the Radica R&D team, we can benefit from an RI solution version upgrade in 2010. This would improve the efficiency of our e-mail marketing workflow and allow the JSHOPPERS.com team to devote more time to improving e-mail content and other strategic designs.”
