Ukraine’s NJSIC Oranta wanted to improve its data analysis capabilities and reduce its reliance on time-consuming, error-prone manual reporting processes. To solve those challenges, Oranta deployed a new Microsoft data warehouse and business
intelligence (BI) solution that gives employees self-service reporting functionality. Now, Oranta has a more comprehensive view of its business and has automated key reporting and data-cleansing processes. Additionally, employees are 40 percent more efficient
and can deliver reports to customers faster.
The Oranta National Joint Stock Insurance Company (NJSIC Oranta), founded in 1921 as Ukrderzhstrakh, offers about 20 types of insurance, including auto, property, and personal. Oranta is the tenth-largest insurance company in Ukraine.
||With our consolidated databases and new SQL Server 2012 BI tools, Oranta now has a single, reliable source of data that provides a unified picture of our business.
To better serve its customers, Oranta needed improved analysis capabilities for its 148-gigabyte database. “Business intelligence is critical for Oranta for monitoring customer sales, evaluating pricing policies, assessing the state of Oranta and the market
in general, and planning for the company’s future,” says Kostiantyn Kozachenko, IT Manager, NJSIC Oranta. However, because the company had more than 40 disparate information systems based on different data store technologies, employees struggled to extract
and analyze data. “We had no single source of data, so we relied on manual processes for creating reports,” he says. “Combining data from heterogeneous sources into one Oracle-based analysis system was time-consuming, costly, and prone to error.”
As a result, Oranta had no reliable way to measure its progress. “We didn’t have control over the business and without that, growth and development are impossible,” Kozachenko says.
After replacing most of its existing information systems with one based on Microsoft SQL Server 2008R2 data management software, Oranta began its search for a new lower-cost BI solution in early 2011.
Oranta, a longtime Microsoft customer, decided to create a new BI solution based on Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Enterprise. “There was no other comparable solution in Ukraine that would meet our business requirements,” says Kozachenko. “Microsoft offered the
best set of integrated technologies for us to build a flexible, easily scalable solution.”
In March 2011, Oranta began developing its own custom data warehouse and BI solution that consolidates four independent databases for reporting purposes. Implemented on HP ProLiant server computers, the solution uses SQL Server 2012 Integration Services
to prepare database copies for reporting, update system configuration, and monitor data for consistency. The solution also employs SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services for internal and external reporting.
Oranta is also using Microsoft SQL Server PowerPivot for Microsoft Excel 2010, a new data analysis tool, to work with larger data sets than before. It is also taking advantage of the SQL Server 2012 Master Data Services Add-In for Excel, a tool that employees
can use to publish data to the database with one click, while maintaining data integrity.
In addition, Oranta is using the SQL Server 2012 xVelocity memory-optimized columnstore index, which stores data in columns instead of rows. Along with other database compression features in SQL Server 2012, Oranta will be able to use xVelocity to improve
performance and store more data.
Oranta also plans to use the Power View feature in SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services, a data analysis tool that can provide intuitive ad-hoc reporting capabilities.
Currently, more than 200 employees are using the SQL Server 2012 solution, which handles cash flow data and sales commission data for insurance agents. Eventually, more than 2,500 Oranta employees will use the solution for data analysis and reporting.
Using its new BI solution, NJSIC Oranta has gained a single source of data, which gives a better view of the company’s business. The solution also helps Oranta automate critical processes and gives employees a faster way to create reports, which, in turn,
can be delivered to customers faster.
Provides Better View of the Business
The new solution at NJSIC Oranta offers integrated BI tools that give the company a better, more complete view of its business. “With our consolidated databases and new SQL Server 2012 BI tools, Oranta now has a single, reliable source of data that provides
a unified picture of our business,” says Kozachenko.
The solution also helps Oranta be more competitive nationwide. “We have a unique solution in the Ukraine market that is able to fully cover all business processes of the company and is easily scalable in terms of functionality and performance,” says Kozachenko.
Automates Key Processes, Saves Money
Oranta has automated key processes that were previously manual. “With SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services and SQL Server 2012 Integration Services, we have been able to completely automate report creating and data cleansing,” says Kozachenko. “That automation
has improved the overall quality of the data, which is no longer susceptible to human error.”
NJSIC Oranta also anticipates cost savings, because the data compression features in SQL Server 2012 will help store additional data. “We will save money by not having to buy new storage,” says Kozachenko.
Improves Efficiency by 40 Percent
With the SQL Server 2012 Master Data Services Add-In for Excel, employees have a familiar tool to quickly create their own business reports. “By managing and creating their own reports, our employees will be 40 percent more efficient,” says Kozachenko. “As
a result, there will be no delay in transferring customer data from the head office to regional branches. Also, when we need to prepare reports for government customers, for example, we expect to get the data to them in a much shorter time frame than before.”
