Situation and challenges
A.P. Møller – Mærsk company had a very large corporate intranet installation (over 20’000 sites) with various, non-standardized branding packages on current Microsoft SharePoint 2007 farms. The costs of maintenance, upgrades and operating the environment
were very high, mainly due to decentralization and uniqueness of each business unit branding solutions. The main goal of the project delivered by Predica was to standardize the branding across the entire worldwide conglomerate during the migration from Microsoft
SharePoint 2007 to Microsoft SharePoint 2010 and to enable users to easily browse a deep and wide sites hierarchy. To achieve that the amount of custom solutions deployed to previous platform had to be reduced significantly, but with the assumption that autonomy
and own branding of each business unit had to remain intact. Apart from varying requirements for the look and feel among business units, some common elements like My Sites and Search also had to be covered with the solution with the emphasis on the consistency
and integrity of the entire SharePoint sites branding.
Single SharePoint solution was implemented and deployed for entire group branding. To achieve specific customization requirements from business units customized page layouts, site templates and theme supporting style sheets were used. The branded elements
varied depending on most often used site types: portal publishing sites, team sites, my sites and search.
Look and feel improvements were not only improvements the solution was supposed to bring to the platform. A common top navigation bar was delivered which allowed users to navigate through the complicated multi web application and site collection environment
easily and effectively. Enhanced banner area provided the additional internal marketing possibilities as well as the ability to target business unit specific images used to support different identities of various group units. All of these features fully support
built-in Microsoft SharePoint 2010 platform themes functionality, making it easy for the users to influence the look and feel of particular sites without the loss of the company wide branding integrity.
The branding of the whole corporate intranet Microsoft SharePoint 2010 based platform was unified under one vendor solution, thus decreasing the costs related to previously applied approach of having multiple branding solutions for different business units.
Therefore also supporting and operating one centralized solution was easier and more standardized.
The increased use of the features built into Microsoft SharePoint 2010 platform allowed to decrease the need of additional non-standard customizations which again led to reduction of the costs of the development work required to fulfill still complex requirements
for the new platform branding and unification.
The branding stream of the entire corporate intranet consolidation project was also enthusiastically received by key project stakeholders and end users.
The key role of Predica and the branding solution can be best summed up by Maersk’s Head of CSC Application Management department:
"We are very satisfied with the branding project Predica has delivered and the way we could utilize new SharePoint 2010 features. The solution is flexible and allows us to centralize branding efforts and decrease operations difficulties and costs. Predica
