Total Petrochemicals Migrates from Notes to SharePoint Easily and Securely with Solutions from Quest Software
Total Petrochemicals is one of the largest publicly-traded oil and gas companies in the world. When the company needed to migrate applications and content from Lotus Notes to SharePoint without data loss or business interruption, it turned to Quest Software.
The Challenge
In 2008, Total began a global project to migrate from Lotus Notes to a Microsoft environment. In particular, the company needed to smoothly migrate a variety of Notes applications to SharePoint without data loss or user disruption. The IT staff determined that they needed an easy-to-use and reliable migration tool. Paul Wansart, Domain Manager at Total, said, “We had two main selection criteria: easy configuration for the migration of application data, and the ability to replay the migration scenarios as many times as needed to ensure good results.”
In addition, the IT staff realized that after the migration, they would need help with Notes application recomposition. They began looking for a tool to help them quickly and easily rebuild complex Notes applications in SharePoint, including sites, applications, menus, and dashboards, without custom coding.

After careful evaluation of the available migration solutions, Total chose Quest Notes Migrator for SharePoint. Notes Migrator for SharePoint enables organizations to accurately analyze their Lotus Notes application content and securely migrate it to SharePoint without data loss. It offers both automated migration of standard Notes applications and advanced migration of complex or custom Notes applications.

Finding a solution to help with Notes application recomposition after the migration was more of a challenge. Their research led them to Quest Web Parts for SharePoint. Web Parts for SharePoint enables organizations to rapidly rebuild complex Notes applications in SharePoint without custom coding, reducing the cost and time to build applications by up to 80 percent. The suite of web parts connects and manages list, library, and discussion data within and across sites. This allows organizations to easily reconstruct Notes applications with a consistent look and feel, as well as incorporate rich functionality, data integrity and data security. This allowed Total to quickly reconfigure Lotus Notes applications on SharePoint, minimizing the impact on end users.
The Bottom Line
Using Notes Migrator for SharePoint, Total was able to efficiently and securely migrate its Lotus Notes applications and content to SharePoint. “Notes Migrator for SharePoint is mature, stable, and extremely easy to use,” commented Wansart. “We were able to migrate more than 250 applications with no interruption to users or other problems. Moreover, this solution does not require much human intervention, which saved us a great deal of time and money.”
