Riga Stradins University University Reduces Management Costs and Enhances Security with New Software

“We expect this approach of merging endpoint security with overall endpoint management will simplify deployment and management, lowering the total cost of ownership per desktop by about 5 percent.”
—Kristaps Cudars, Principal Information Systems Architect, Riga Stradins University

Situation
Riga Stradins University (RSU), in Riga, Latvia, trains doctors, pharmacists, and nurses, and specialists in rehabilitation, public healthcare, social sciences, and law.

RSU has long used Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 to manage its 1,000 desktop computers and 50 servers. However, it wanted to simplify work for its IT staff, which dealt with typical university security threats, such as visiting professors plugging USB drives into the network and exposing the school to an array of risks.

Solution
RSU joined an early adopter program for Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010. With this software, organizations can use Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2 client management software to deploy and maintain endpoint protection.

By the end of 2010, RSU plans to have all 1,000 PCs and 50 servers safeguarded by Forefront Endpoint Protection.

Benefits
By using Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010, RSU gains:

Lower costs. "We like the Microsoft strategy of using Forefront Endpoint Protection and System Center Configuration Manager together,” says Kristaps Cudars, Principal Information Systems Architect at RSU. “We expect this approach of merging endpoint security with overall endpoint management will simplify deployment and management, lowering the total cost of ownership per desktop by about 5 percent."

Enhanced security. With security as part of the console that RSU already uses to manage computers, its management staff can expand its efforts easily. “We’ve increased the number of people available to respond to security incidents by 20 percent with no increase in headcount,” Cudars says. “We absolutely expect that our infrastructure will be more secure with Forefront Endpoint Protection.”
