for its banking customers. The new utility had to be ready within a month and meet the performance criteria of returning search results of 2.2 million records within one second. Leveraging Microsoft’s expertise via the Microsoft Services Partner Advantage
program, Unisys successfully ensured a seamless transition from the legacy to the new utility, while achieving the performance requirements. Significant cost-savings were gained, in addition to heightened customer satisfaction and increased competitiveness.

To help its banking customers with their close-of-business-day (COB) processes at bank branches, Unisys has been subscribing to a third-party utility which helps to parse daily cheque records. As the utility was written in C++ and based on a 20-year-old application
code, Unisys made a business decision to stop subscribing to the utility and rewrite a new one instead.
In order to ensure zero disruption to its banking clients’ operations, the Unisys team needed to rewrite the business critical utility within a month. It was also critical that the new utility performs on par with the previous utility, which successfully searched
2.2 million records and returned the results in less than one second for the entire transaction.
While the Unisys team had experience in supporting the utility, it partnered Microsoft for its expertise on parsing logic and skills to rewrite the utility within such a short time. “Due to the stringent performance requirement and the complex processing logic
of the file containing the daily cheque records, we needed Microsoft’s expertise to help us optimise the algorithm to ensure that the new utility meets the set performance benchmark,” explained Mrs. Swarnalakshmi Balasubramaniam, Senior Technical Architect,

on Microsoft Services to help us meet the stringent performance criteria and tight project deadline,” said Mr. Prashant Nayak, Director, Client Engagement Team – India, Technology, Consulting and Integration Solutions, Unisys.
According to Mr. Irfan Ahmed, Technical Lead for the Microsoft Services team, “The performance benchmark of returning search results within one second for 2.2 million records is challenging even with the use of a database. To create a utility that performs
at this level, we needed to thoroughly understand the file structure, format and parsing logic to truly optimise the algorithm of the code.”
Working closely with the Unisys team, the Microsoft Services team conducted an in-depth requirement study, including a comprehensive ‘what if’ analysis. After several iterations, the team delivered a sample custom code, written using C#, for Unisys’ testing
on the near-real sample data, a 90-percent replica of the obfuscated data. The sample code worked seamlessly at the first instance and successfully achieved the specified performance requirements. Once thoroughly tested in the user-acceptance testing (UAT)
environment, Unisys started deploying it at customers’ sites in August 2011.

With the help of Microsoft Services, Unisys has gained significant savings in developmental costs, which would otherwise have required many person-hours with several resources being tied down across several weeks to rewrite the new utility. In addition, Unisys
also gained additional cost-savings by eliminating the recurring annual licensing costs of the third-party utility, and replacing it with a one-time development costs.
