After more than 10 years of R&D investment, China has become one of Microsoft's most important markets and today, is playing an increasingly significant role in the company's global innovation strategy. The establishment of Microsoft China R&D Group on January 18, 2006 marked a key milestone for long-term investment and development in China. Microsoft has now created a complete innovation cycle from curiosity-driven research to strategic ecosystem partnerships in an R&D Group that has the most complete organizational structure, comprehensive business operation and largest R&D investment outside of the United States. Currently, Microsoft China R&D Group employs 1,500 full-time researchers and developers and has operations in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. Focusing on the big picture
At Microsoft China R&D Group, we focus on three missions: 1) Become Microsoft's core global base for fundamental research, technological incubation and product development; 2) Enhance cooperation and exchanges between Microsoft and its local partners in China, while cultivating a team of leaders with international experience in large-scale project management; 3) Explore in depth, the demands of new emerging markets such as China, and carry out highly localized R&D based on the unique needs of these markets. Microsoft China R&D Group is comprised of Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA), Microsoft Advanced Technology Center (ATC), and product R&D teams in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. A Strategic Partnership Group was also established to cultivate partnerships with outstanding IT companies from across China, and enhance cooperation in software outsourcing, technical transfer, and product R&D. At Microsoft China R&D Group, we specialize in the four pillars of basic research, technology incubation, product development, and strategic partnerships. Under the leadership of a skillful management team and the executive leadership of Chairman Dr Ya-Qin Zhang, and Chief Technology Officer Dr Hong-Jiang Zhang, the Group focuses on five major R&D directions: 1) Mobile and embedded technologies; 2) Web technology products and services; 3) Digital entertainment; 4) Servers and tools; 5) Emerging markets.
