From the Editor
As you may know, our team here in the Windows Division produces the WHDC Web and this newsletter, and we also manage WinHEC and the Driver Development Conference. We're working with Windows developers and program managers this spring to create new content and new activities for hardware engineers, driver developers, and business decision-makers for WinHEC 2006, May 23-25 in Seattle.
WinHEC 2006 is your best opportunity before the release of Windows Vista to get the facts straight from the Windows developers and experts in technical seminars:
WinHEC 2006 also introduces hands-on labs that will be facilitated by Microsoft experts. Labs marked below with an asterisk [*] require a Design Preview Agreement, to be available for download in April.) Subjects that we currently plan to cover include:
| • |
Technologies such as Web Services on Devices and XPS and Printing.
| • |
The Windows Driver Kit and related testing and simulation technologies such as Driver Package Verifier, Windows Driver Testing Framework, and Device Simulation Framework*.
| • |
Windows Driver Foundation components, including Static Analysis Tools, User-Mode Driver Framework*, and Kernel-Mode Driver Framework*.

WHDC After Dark: We've been telling our boss that we're too busy with spring projects to be prowling around the Web for fun. But our friends on other teams make us go look at the technical details behind the news.

SLAM: "In some very key areas, for example, driver verification, we're building tools that can do actual proof about the software and how it works in order to guarantee the reliability." --Bill Gates

The Revision 0.8 release contains all final hardware requirements that go into affect at release-to-manufacturing (RTM) of Windows Vista. This release includes several updates that are based on partner feedback from the previous draft of the requirements documents for client systems, server systems, and devices.
Kernel-Mode Driver Framework
KMDF includes a built-in verifier that provides KMDF-specific checks that are not currently available in the driver verifier (Verifier.exe). The frameworks verifier is disabled by default. This tip explains how to enable it for use during debugging.
KMDF includes an internal trace logger (sometimes called the in-flight recorder). The frameworks logger provides a recent history of events for each KMDF driver and is often helpful during debugging. This tip explains how to view the log.
