Silverlight helps the HD Jumper movie site take off.

“One of things I really like about the process and the tools is being able to have the creative department work on their deliverables and then easily bring them over to application developers...that's always been a bottleneck in the past. Now, to be able to share the same assets, the same toolset, and the same source control is a real positive.”

David Reeves
Lead Architect, Moxie Interactive

The Situation

Assignment: Give the fans what they want.

Moxie Interactive was tasked to create an HD Silverlight site for the movie Jumper to feature exclusive content only available within the Silverlight experience. The team had access to select creative assets—including director comments, behind-the-scenes photos, and facts about props used in the filming. The target audience was the tech-savvy Jumper fans who were into science fiction and fantasy—with a related interest in technology.

The Challenge

Silverlight training to site delivery in less than 30 days.

The Moxie team was psyched to get this project with so much creative potential. Problem was, not only had no one on the team worked with Silverlight before, but they had just two days of training and expected to launch less than a month later. Also, since Silverlight was in its first release, there were some challenges for which they had to find creative work arounds. In the end, however, Lead Architect David Reeves says, "Users aren’t going to see a lot of difference between this site that's developed in Silverlight 1.0 and one done in Flash 9.0...which speaks volumes about a 1.0 product."

The Solution

Jump in.

Conceptually, Moxie wanted to focus on the theme from the movie—the ability to jump from location to location—and immerse the user in that experience. To bring their ideas to life within such a tight timeframe, Moxie effectively quadrupled the developer team via Silverlight. Only 20% of Moxie's application developers work in ActionScript. The rest are .NET–centric. A Silverlight solution let them immediately leverage those .NET skills in a rich media environment. Plus, says Reeves, "That teams can work in tandem in Silverlight really helps in situations where we're under the gun timeline-wise."

The Upshot

Good for workflow. Good for business.

Reeves is sold. He says, "We can really take advantage of our.net team with Silverlight. From a business perspective, that translates into us delivering a solution more quickly, which results in a larger return on investment. In short, we can spend less money if we can leverage the skills we already have in-house."
