EXPAND YOUR CAPABILITIES WITH THE MICROSOFT COMMERCIAL AUTHORIZED REFURBISHER (MAR) PROGRAM
The Microsoft Commercial Authorized Refurbisher (MAR) program is tailored to the needs of large (5000+ systems per month) PC refurbishers who deliver genuine Windows software licenses on systems they sell. Genuine software extends the life of the PC and enhances its overall performance. The MAR program provides a platform to extend these benefits to the 28+ million customers who buy refurbished PCs every year.
ADDED CREDIBILITY FOR REFURBISHERS
Selling refurbished PCs that meet rigorous standards set forth by the MAR program strengthens your reputation as a trustworthy provider. You’ll give customers the peace of mind that comes with knowing the software on their refurbished PC is genuine with significantly fewer security risks. In the end they’ll receive a better value, a superior PC experience—and greater reason to do business with you again.

FINANCIAL ADVANTAGES
The MAR program can help you generate revenue while offering customers a cost-effective software solution at the same time. Rather than purchasing hardware and a licensed operating system separately—at higher retail rates—your customers receive a complete PC-with-operating-system solution right out of the box.
Microsoft® Get Genuine Kit for Windows® XP Professional or Vista® Business
The Problem: Help customers get legal when they have non-genuine Windows XP Professional or Vista Business installed on their existing PCs.
The Solution: The Get Genuine Kit (GGK) for Windows XP Professional or Vista Business. GGK offers a full Windows operating system license to customers in need of legalizing existing PCs, but is not to be used for new PCs.
How It Works:
- Acquire GGK from a Microsoft Authorized OEM Distributor.
- Affix, or instruct the end user to affix, the enclosed Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label to the PC.
- Microsoft recommends, but does not require, that on the end user’s computer system you either:
- Update the Product Key
- Perform a reinstall of Windows XP or Windows Vista
Either you or the end user must do one of these above mentioned bullets in order to receive updates, upgrades, and support services.
The most cost-effective way to acquire Windows software is preinstalled on a new PC. However, more customers are becoming aware that they are running non-genuine Windows XP Professional or Vista Business on their existing PCs. GGK offers your customers an easy legalization solution for their existing, fully assembled PCs, and will help grow your revenue and strengthen your customer relationships.*

Mislicensing Fact Sheet
Important tips to help your customers make the best licensing choices.
Mislicensing is a form of piracy that includes use of a volume licensing agreement for the full version of a Microsoft Windows operating system. The volume agreements only provide upgrade rights, and each upgrade requires a full underlying Windows license. Mislicensing can also occur when a customer acquires a type of license for which that customer is not qualified, such as acquiring academic software when the customer is not eligible to purchase that software. Arm your customers with the facts to help them make smart licensing choices on the systems they’re running.
Full Windows desktop license on every PC
Each PC needs its own full Windows software license. There are only two legal ways your customers can acquire it:
- Preinstalled through their PC manufacturer, or
- By purchasing a full packaged retail product
Microsoft Volume Licensing programs such as Open License, Select License, Academic License, and Enterprise Agreements cover Windows upgrades only and do not provide a full Windows desktop license.
Avoid costly mistakes
Understanding key facts about software licensing will help your customers avoid inadvertent licensing mistakes. Customers may be at risk if they:
- Purchase PCs without Windows desktop operating systems preinstalled and then use media associated with a Volume License agreement to install base Windows operating systems
- Purchase PCs with non-qualifying underlying versions of Windows desktop licenses installed as the base operating system and then use a commercial Volume License agreement to upgrade to a different version of a Windows operating system
- Attempt to save costs by doing in-place motherboard upgrades without acquiring new Windows licenses for those PCs
- Download and install software from online or unknown sources
