Microsoft Commerce Server 2009

Roadmap

Microsoft has long been committed to the e-commerce arena—from Site Server to Commerce Server 2000, Commerce Server 2002, Feature Pack
1, and Commerce Server 2007, continuing innovation and integration has been a guiding principle. Over the years, fuelled by soaring interest in online shopping, Commerce Server has remained at the forefront of e-commerce innovation and has achieved some key milestones along the way:

  • Commerce Server pioneered the concept of pipelines in Microsoft BizTalk Server

  • Many features originally found in Commerce Server are now found in Microsoft Expression design software, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, and Microsoft SQL Server, among others

  • Commerce Server was also the first .NET enterprise server

But selling products online only scratches the surface of what is possible. By offering businesses advanced catalogue, profiling, marketing, analytics, and order management systems, Microsoft has developed a core foundation of your e-commerce strategy. This continues to be the enduring value of Commerce Server.

With Commerce Server 2007, Microsoft took Connected Commerce to the next level by helping enterprise organizations better integrate business processes and disparate systems, making it easier than ever to create robust, end-to-end Connected Commerce solutions. Furthermore, it shipped as a production-ready Web application taking full advantage of Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 technology, making it possible to get to market in record time.

That commitment is more relevant today than ever before with changing online business models and the rise of Software-as-a-Service, Web 2.0, Service-Oriented Architecture, and other new media technologies.

Where We Are

Today Commerce Server 2009 delivers the ability to increase your business reach by making it possible to sell via multiple channels using an out-of-the-box shopping site, SharePoint Commerce Services, and the Multi-Channel Commerce Foundation.

  • Whether your customers shop using a computer, a mobile phone, a gaming system, or other channels, Commerce Server 2009 introduces full multi-channel support, allowing your business to centrally manage your cross-channel strategy.

  • The new out-of-the-box shopping site leverages Microsoft SharePoint Commerce Services, which provides more than 30 ASP.NET 3.5 Web parts and controls, a comprehensive e-commerce shopping feature set, and technology integration between Commerce Server and Office SharePoint Server technologies.

  • The Multi-Channel Commerce Foundation provides a new, unified, and extensible run-time programming model for Commerce Server, including new run-time e-commerce capabilities.

  • Use the out-of-the-box contemporary Web site with built-in product reviews and ratings to interact with your customers. Leverage the community functionality of Office SharePoint Server 2007 to further engage your customers through forums, blogs, and wikis.

  • Support for Windows Server 2008 and 64-bit gives access to higher performance servers and easily supports large, complex catalogues.

  • The new Commerce Foundation unifies the calling surface so that you can easily add third-party best-of-breed features—such as payment providers, fraud detection, address verification, tax services, and other services—into our unified calling model.

Where We Are Going

  • Ongoing service packs and platform support updates will be provided for the standard support lifecycle of Commerce Server 2007, which is currently slated to end on July 12, 2011.

  • Microsoft remains fully committed to the e-commerce space and will be providing successors for the current Commerce Server SKUs in the future.

  • Commerce Server will remain a stand-alone product; e-commerce is a unique enough scenario with extremely demanding requirements that will oftentimes warrant a stand-alone deployment. That said, Microsoft is continuing to pursue deeper integration with other Microsoft products and technologies as appropriate to provide the best integrated technology story possible.

Summary

As the e-commerce needs of your enterprise continue to evolve, Microsoft remains committed to ensuring the success of its customers by delivering innovations and value through future releases to help developers, IT professionals, designers, enterprise businesses, small businesses, hosting services, and business users drive integration and value to their company through e-commerce.
