IE7 blank history in Internet Explorer General

  Question
I have migrated from a PC running XP and IE7 to a new PC running Vista and
IE7. I used the Easy Transfer software to do this and I have all my
Favourites okay. On my old PC the drop-down History tab worked fine but now
with Vista this tab is blank. Frustratingly, I know the information is there
because I have downloaded a piece of freeware which allows me to view the
history -- and so it appears my problem is in getting IE7 to look in the
right place. So far I haven't succeeded in finding any way of getting IE7 to
look in any specific place.
I have seen a number of other discussion threads which seem to go round in
circles with no resolution. Would you please give me some simple
instructions to get IE7 to look in the right place, which as far as I can
tell from the freeware is the default place. Thanks.

What are you calling the "drop-down History tab"? F4? Ctrl-h? CursorDown?

Previously you wrote:

I don't have Vista so I can't say for sure whether its History has been
moved there. FWIW XP's History, even after IE7, remains here:

%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\History\

Specifically the implementation of the user's browsing history was to
store it in index.dat files under History.IE5 and various other
subdirectories to hold browsing history for day of current week or previous
weeks. I doubt if that would be transferrable because it would also
involve synchronizing entries in the registry. So, if your freeware tool
didn't also update the registry appropriately most of the History data
would be lost anyway.

I doubt that that level of customization is available.

Where? AFAIK yours is the first mention of AppData with History
in this newsgroup (IE General).

Ok. Purely by chance Frank Saunders' post may be confirming that
you at least have the directory name right:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general&mid=a4722f55-9f46-46c6-9456-a43ca83fbff1&sloc=en-us

(web interface search for
AppData History
)

<quote>

I will assume this is on Vista.
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files.
It is a hidden folder.

</quote>

That was about the location of the TIF in Vista. (The thread mentioned
History.IE5 tangentially.) However, the TIF in XP was also in the same
parent subdirectory that I mentioned above so it would perhaps be found
there (assuming its not a junction directory, etc.)

I think you should instead concentrate on describing your symptoms.
E.g. it is not even clear yet if your History is working normally and the
only thing that you think is wrong is that History entries from the previous OS
are not being seen. To reinitialize your History you would use the
Clear History command or (at an extreme) use RIES (ref. KB923737).

  Hi Simpleuser

You and I have the same problem - see my thread "IE7 History is blank -
Vista User". I too migrated my settings across from an old machine with XP.
I too know that my history is there because I can see it when I use the
Tools/OPtions/Browsing History/Settings/View Files option but no matter what
i try the history is always blank. And yet the favorites are there fine.

I am not having any luck with the solutions posted. It's so frustrating.

  Dear Robert

It sounds as if I suffer from the same problem as Simpleuser. Please see my
posting "IE7 History is blank - Vista User".

By "history" we both mean Crl + Shift + H or the menu you can pull down from
in IE7 which is pulled down by clicking on the drop down next to the
back/forward arrows and address bar. It is not just the old OS history that
does not appear - it is all the new web pages visited as well. Nothing
appears period.

I am running IE7 on a Dell notebook which came pre-installed with Vista Home
Premium. I too transferred files and settings to this new machine from my
old notebook which ran XP and since then the IE7 history is not accessible as
a shortcut to pages previously visited - the list is blank. However, History
files are being stored as I can see them when I go to Tool/Options/browsing
history/View files - they just don't appear in the Ctrl + Shift + H list.

I have checked in the Tools/Internet options/History settings to make sure I
am keeping the history - and I am - for 20 days. I have tried Clear History
Command and RIES but still no history appears.

I am running Dell approved McAfee Security Centre - it comes pre-loaded

None of the soutions offered thus far have worked.

Any more suggestions?

I forgot about that one. And Alt-V,G too I suppose? ; )

That is the TIF viewer that you are looking at.
It is completely independent of the History folder.

> they just don't appear in the Ctrl + Shift + H list.

That should be a special view of History.IE5\index.dat
or wherever the equivalent in Vista is now located
(assuming Vista has retained the same implementation too,
of course.)

As I explained to the OP I think it is unlikely that you will be able to import
your old History. The History is built out of not just that index.dat file
but also registry entries to match the History's subdirectories which
are split off daily and weekly.

>

If you are doing the same sort of thing that the OP mentioned
my guess would be that it has created a permissions conflict.
I think you may have to at least delete the whole History folder.
(Clearing History would not go that far. In fact, IIRC it doesn't even
delete the index.dat, just reinitializes it. So, again, if there were a
permissions problem with it that could explain your symptom.)

Delete the folder without anything else having the History opened.
In particular make sure that iexplore.exe is not an active task.
You can check more precisely with Process Explorer and finding
all tasks which have a handle open with History.IE5\index.dat
(e.g. use Ctrl-f Process Explorer Search for that string.)

Hmm... There are more of those than I imagined. Maybe you wouldn't have
to stop all of them. One was explorer.exe itself, which is doable but more
"exciting". <eg> I don't think that I have ever tried deleting the whole folder
before. I think if I did find that it wouldn't delete with as many processes
stopped as possible that I would just boot an alternate partition (or logon as
another admin user) and delete the problem folder that way. If you have
such an alternate admin userid or alternate partition you might find it easier
to do that anyway.

>
> I am running Dell approved McAfee Security Centre - it comes pre-loaded

Yikes! Deja vu? When IE6 first came out McAfee was notorious for
interfering with the operation of user's History. I thought that they had
fixed this. Perhaps they had a regression? <EG>

Good luck

Robert

Type "shell:history" (no quotation marks) in the Start Search box in the
Start Menu, and click on the result.
What is the path (location) of the folder that opens? (In the address bar
of the Explorer window that pops up, right-click the address and choose Copy
Address as Text. Paste it into your reply. For example, C:\Users\(Your
Name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History).

In the History folder, what do you see?

  Hi dean-dean

Thank you for yor response. The resulting path is:

C:\Users\Will\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History

There are no files in this folder. It simply says: "This folder is empty."

Hmmm. Hi Simpleuser. Your situation is slightly different than Trawler's,
if the tilde mark "~" is truly in front of the folder name, i.e., ~History.

In the Registry Editor, go to these keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders
In the right pane, under Name, does History have, under Data,
C:\Users\Philip\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History? Or is it
C:\Users\Philip\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\~History?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders
In the right pane, under Name, does History have, under Data,
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\~History?

And, like I asked Trawler, go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\5.0\Cache\Extensible Cache
In the left pane, Expand the Key "Extensible Cache" . You should see one or
more sub-keys that are named MSHistxxxxxxxxxxx, where xxxxxxxxxxx is a bunch
of numbers, for example, MSHist012007043020070507.

For now, Select one of those keys that begin with MSHist (try the last one
listed), and, in the left pane, under Name, Select CachePath. Right-click
CachePath, and choose Modify. When the Edit String window pops up,
right-click the box under Value Data, choose Select All, then right-click
and choose Copy. Click on Cancel to close the Edit String window. (Then
you can close Registry Editor). Paste the Value Data into your reply to
this post. For example,
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History\History.IE5\MSHist012007043020070507.

dean-dean,

Except for Trawler's disclosure about McAfee as a possible factor
these are probably two *completely* different cases. (SimpleUser (OP)
hasn't disclosed any information about AV or security package,
e.g. as potential sources of interference with the History folder.)

Unless SimpleUser has done something else we are not aware of
the odd name and location could be due to the uncertain changes
some unspecified software which was used to somehow "import"
the History during an upgrade to Vista:

The information that I quoted inside that quote was from an earlier
unanswered post by the same user.

What isn't clear is whether the History which was being viewed there is current
or old. I suspect it is old but who knows? I suggested that RIES be used
to start over but we aren't told if that was tried either...

  Answer
  Robert,

Yes, I did manage to find the entire thread using IE shortly after my last
response to Simpleuser . Basically, as the "disappearing History pane" has
happened to me two times over the course of testing several Beta versions of
Vista, and once with Vista RTM. (All occurring when installing notebook
utility drivers from Sony for my laptop. But it didn't necessarily happen
consistently, and not always from the same driver installation. I'm at a
loss as to why this happened, but, in general, it only happedened at an
installation. My only theory on that is Vista's use of Junctions, and that
some re-direction point went awry. Why the History folder, I don't know.
They were Installshield installations). In my case, each time, my History
folder was moved to the user Temp folder. That alone, is not necessarily a
problem, if the registry knows where to find it, and the History folder has
its appropriate desktop.ini's, both for History and its subfolder
History.IE5.

I've recently discovered, though, that when the History folder is moved, or
re-created (as I think is the case for Simpleuser), Vista has, basically, a
bug. Previous Windows OS's will automatically create a new History folder,
if one is not to be found at logon, and Vista does this as well, putting the
shell folder in the location specified in the registry, and recreating the
indices and desktop.ini's automatically. This week, to make sure my ducks
were in a row, and review a course of action, I purposely deleted my Vista
History folder while operating Windows XP, having a dual boot setup on my
computer. Alternately, I deleted XP's History folder when logged on to
Vista.

Booting back into XP after History's deletion, the folder was re-created, as
expected. Internet Explorer in XP had no problem showing the contents of
the History pane. It did have two invalid markers, when viewed by Date.
Clicking on those markers, being referenced by the registry's Extensible
Cache entries, showed nothing, of course, since their index.dat's were gone,
but could easily be deleted by right-clicking on them. That got the
Extensible Cache data up to speed.

Booting into Vista after History's deletion, however, showed a different
story. And herein lies the problem. Vista did indeed re-create the History
folder, in the default, user location. Using Command Prompt's dir function,
I saw that all necessary indices, History.IE5, and desktop.ini's were there
also. In other words, a carbon copy of XP's History folders' and files'
names. But no items were in the History pane in IE7. It was completely
blank. Navigating to History using Explorer, I noticed the folder was not
displaying the special icon. I opened History, but it did not have the
special History "Time Period" column view, but rather the characteristics of
a normal folder, showing the hidden History.IE5 folder, etc. Then I opened
the desktop.ini, and Notepad showed it as completely blank, which jarred my
memory as to how I had (finally) repaired History previously.

Previously, I had two copies of a History folder when the device
installations went afoul. The old one in the default path, and the new one
in my Temp folder. IE7 was referencing the one in my temp folder, because
that was the new location, as per registry entry. IE7 had no History pane
items though. To fix it, I edited the registry to reference the default
location, since that History folder was sound. It was only after this
week's experiment that I discovered why newly auto-created History folders
don't show the History pane in IE7. For some reason, the desktop.ini for
the History folder, while having its system and hidden attributes, has no
data. This is why new creations of the History folder in Vista don't work,
at least from IE7's vantage.

In Simpleuser's case, I suspect you are right. During some transfer of his
old history data, a new History folder was created because of a name
conflict. The new path was put in his registry. I'm hoping the "real"
History folder is there. Hence my solution for his particular problem: if
it's there, Simpleuser is probably home free by changing the path in the
registry. If it's not there, Vista has to create one, adding one more step
to fixing his problem, because of the blank desktop.ini bug (which, no
doubt, is causing ~History not to work as well). My resolution for
Simpleuser also included thoughts on the use of the tilde character in a
folder name. Vista doesn't like certain characters in folder names, when
referenced by the registry by certain functions (aspects of the bug are
still there, actually). This was an on-going bug discussion during the
Betas. I don't know if the tilde is one of those character's, or has
anything to do with anything, but to put Simpleuser on sound, default
ground, was another factor in my decision to move the folder, via registry,
back to the default (also, in light of the latest problems with Vista and
the IE7 Cumulative Update, e.g., not having the Temporary Internet Files in
its default path being one issue, it may be the best having things as their
defaults). Simpleuser's ability to see his history using a 3rd Party
utility is based on the fact that the index.dat(s) is being updated
normally, and the utility is finding it, via registry path, and reading it.
It's unlikely the path would be hard-coded in the application, since History
is a user shell folder, with all kind of possibilities for a path. The fact
that Simpleuser has no Extensible Cache content for History.IE5 in the
registry, and apparently never has, may indicate a double desktop.ini
problem, or a tilde problem. A re-build or a return seemed the best idea.

In Trawler's case, I suspect the installation of a program, where the
installer executable was not entirely geared to Vista, is the cause of his
History problem, and probably not an on-going function of any program. His
History folder path is the default one, as per User Shell Folder, at least.
(I think though, that it must have been moved "temporarily", but moved back
by the demands of the registry, after logging off and back on). Too, his
Extensible Cache sub-keys may be showing something else. I'm curious to
know what. In Beta versions of Vista, like the TIF folder, you actually had
the choice to move the History folder, via the folder's Properties dialog.
Curiously, it split History into two locations, leaving part of the History
folder you were trying to move where it was, but moving the Extensible Cache
(History.IE5).... That option is no longer available in RTM. Probably just
as well. I tried to use that function to repair one of my Beta History
mishaps, trying both Move and then Restore Default; neither worked. Now I
Know why. The solution for Trawler's problem, should he report back, may be
quite simple, with a Copy and Paste of a desktop.ini (and possibly an attrib
using command prompt). Or the solution could be tricky, but do-able,
depending on what else might be missing in his History folder. As an aside,
I noticed, too, that the content of the desktop.ini in Vista is slightly
different than the one in XP.

At any rate, both posters have blank or missing desktop.ini's, as evidenced
by the fact the they got "This folder is empty", rather than the special
History view, when running the shell:history command. Had Explorer been set
to show hidden and protected system files, of course, they may have seen
something more.

I did report the bug to Microsoft, but I'm not sitting by the phone :-)

I don't think RIES will re-create the History folder; regarding History, it
only deletes the user's history data, from what documentation I could find.

Have you checked the other desktop.ini in the History tree too?

Have you looked at NTFS permissions for all those objects as well?
E.g. currently some Vista users are having a problem with the permissions
of the AntiPhishing directory. Perhaps that OS is messing up History
objects in a similar way? E.g. if you didn't have write permission in the
cloned directory (which I guess would have to include the desktop.ini)
perhaps you would have a reason for it being 0 bytes (blank)?

FWIW I'd try recreating the whole directory and monitor its recreation
using ProcMon. I already made that suggestion somewhere in this thread
but I don't know if the idea registered with either poster. ; )

Hi Trawler, this will take a little detective work.

In the Registry Editor, go to these keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders
In the right pane, under Name, does History have, under Data,
C:\Users\Will\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders
In the right pane, under Name, does History have, under Data,
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\5.0\Cache\Extensible Cache
In the left pane, Expand the Key "Extensible Cache" . You should see one or
more sub-keys that are named MSHistxxxxxxxxxxx, where xxxxxxxxxxx is a bunch
of numbers, for example, MSHist012007043020070507.

For now, Select one of those keys that begin with MSHist (try the last one
listed), and, in the left pane, under Name, Select CachePath. Right-click
CachePath, and choose Modify. When the Edit String window pops up,
right-click the box under Value Data, choose Select All, then right-click
and choose Copy. Click on Cancel to close the Edit String window. (Then
you can close Registry Editor). Paste the Value Data into your reply to
this post. For example,
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History\History.IE5\MSHist012007043020070507.

  Hi dean-dean
Hope I am not confusing things as I started this thread but it has been
taken up by a user with similar problems - but possible different. I never
got a resonse to my post and still have an issue to resolve.
Here goes - the first two regedit checks came to the path you describe -
using my name but ending in ~History.
The third check did not end as you expected as the "Extensible Cache" folder
contains two further folders "feedplat" and "UserData". Neither of these
appears to contain either of the sub-keys you have described so I await your
instructions.
Many thanks.
