  BITS will not start - error 1083 in Windows Background Transfer

  Question
  this is the result, at the command line: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
net start bits

System error 1083 has occurred.

The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not
implement the service.

This was discovered when the Guide in Media Center 2005 would not download,
giving this error: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GUIDE DOWNLOAD ERROR
The Guide could not be downloaded for the following reason: Windows system
error (Code: 3) Select Help for more information. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Media Center 2005 identifies error (Code: 3) as having to do with Background
Intelligent Transfer Service.

BITS is not running, nor can it be started using SERVICES.MSC or "net start
bits" from the command line.

  Answer
  It looks like the BITS service settings are messed up. Please download the
bitsadmin.exe tool from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?amp;displaylang=en&familyid=49AE8576-9BB9-4126-9761-BA8011FABF38&displaylang=en
and do the following:

bitsadmin /util /repairservice /force

After that send me the output of the following command:

bitsadmin /util /version /verbose

Let me know if this fixed the problem.

I am still without a Media Guide, and Windows Updates cannot be downloaded

Inasmuch as it probably wouldn't hurt, I tried its solution.

Following its instructions to download and run the HELPSVCFIX utility --
after restarting the computer, BITS had started.
