Hi, I'm having trouble with Windows Movie Maker. When I import .avi files into the program, only the sound is imported, but the video part is not. I have tested this with .wmv files and there is no problem. Pictures and sound files import correctly as well. I have ticked all the boxes in Tools > Options > Compatibility Any help is appreciated. Thank you. -- sandstorm6299

I wonder if the following codec
package would improve the issue?

Proceed at your own risk.....

Vista Codec Package

Thanks John, I too just realized it was a codec issue. Both videos that I had tested were encoded and my computer doesn't have the required codecs. Thanks for the link. -- sandstorm6299

You're welcome.

If you try the codec package let us know the result.

I am having the same problem, with my .avi files only being recognized as
audio. I went to the site you recommended, but can find no link to download
the software. Where can one do this on the major geek site? I don't see a
shopping cart or download option on the link that is given. Any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks

unfortunately it did not work for me.

I am running home premium 64 bit and I tried your suggestion, and even added
the 64 bit extension the website recommended. didn't work, as it still only
plays the audio but no video.

any solutions besides downloading the older version of WMM?

I only see a partial snippet of an older message
and have no idea what you are responding to.

It would be best if you begin a new thread and
describe in detail exactly what the issue is that
you are trying to correct.

I am also having the video issue - trying to view .avi files in WIndows Media
Player in Vista. I did already download the codec, after leaving a donation,
but I still don't see all of the pictures. I am hoping it is now just a
problem at the video creator's end...I also did purchase and run the full
version of Registry Mechanic 8. Let me know if there is anything else!!
Thank you!!

Which specific AVI codec does that AVI use?
Is this 32bit or 64bit Vista?

I've got the same problem with audio and no video with AVI files in WMM. I've tried the suggested and confirmed workin method of installing the Vista Codec Package as posted by John. However, I still get the problem with no video and am now getting the error message "xvidcore.dll no found" when putting AVIs into the timeline, or when importing them. A response to this direct to my email would be nice, however I still try to stay posted here. -- Silver909

This indicates that the uninstall of the XVID codec was broken. This is due
to a bad third party codec installer or uninstaller. Whatever you were
using is/was broken. Unfortunately only they know what they were crazily
doing here. =\

It troubles me when people suggest installing a hat full of codec that aren't needed...they tend to cause more problems than they are worth when conflicts occur (frequently) when it's a matter of only downloading the one required codec will do. Avi extensions are wrapper files that could mean the video file is compressed with unusual codec combinations. Often the source of the avi files should state what codecs are needed and if you are not sure don;t use the video file....or invest in software that can tell you the codec required to play it. -- Clevo
