  Question
Could someone please tell me if this would work to stop the 30 page list of
the updates that have been put on my computer? They are all the same one
Many thanks

MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978)
Their reply was:
That is a big complaint voiced by many people in recent weeks. So far this
Microsoft fix seems to work:

Reinstall MSXML 4.00 sp2
http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/6/5/9657c01e-107f-409c-baac-7...9561629

2. When the File Download window appears, please click the Save button, and
follow the directions to save it to the Desktop.
3. After downloading this file, please double-click the "msxml.msi" file on
the Desktop. Then the installation will be performed automatically.
4. If you receive three options "Modify", "Repair", and "Remove", please
click "Remove" and follow the instructions to remove MSXML 4.0 Service Pack
2.

5. After removing it, please double-click "msxml.msi" file again, click
"Install Now" button, and then follow the instructions.

After reinstalling MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2, please move on to step 2 to
install the update KB927978.

Step 2: Reinstall MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978)
============================================
1. Please download the update from the following link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/2/e/e2e92e52-210b-4774-8cd9-3...0130141

2. When the File Download window appears, please click the Save button, and
follow the directions to save it to the Desktop.
3. After downloading this file, please double-click the
"msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe" file on the Desktop. Then the installation will be
performed automatically.

4. After finishing the above steps, please check the result on the Windows

  Answer
If you are saying the update keeps failing, then follow the instructions in
your post.
Those instructions were supplied by MS Tech

  Thank you,DL.
A friend emailed me the instructions,so I didn't know where they originated.
I never get any warning that the update has failed. I see there are lots of
documents associated with it on my hardrive when I look at explorer. My
computer is only six weeks old

If the update has not failed, I'm unclear as to what '30 page list' you are
refering to

  Then the update is failing.
Usually in the history list there is an indication of failure

  I've just looked again again
"Windows XP MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978) 09 January 2007
Automatic Updates " and this is what they all say and there is a green tick
beside each one, 40 pages full now!

Me neither. I'm too scared to do the reinstall. I'm a mere old lady with not
much *know how*. Thanks for your help. It's appreciated

We are investigating something right now that _may_ shed some light on this issue. We use the MSXML4 SP2 merge module provided by Microsoft as part of our installation package. When KB927978 is installed on the machine, the merge module from MS doesn't recognize that this KB has been applied. If a self repair gets triggered, the MSXML4 SP2 merge module causes KB927978 to be overwritten. Then windows update re-applies KB927978, which triggers a self repair of our product, etc, etc.

I've seen some posts elsewhere that this problem goes away if the person disables their AV product (not ours). I'm guessing that this AV product must have used MSXML4 SP2 merge module. Maybe this hint will allow others to figure out what's going on.

Probably. An update's main purpose is to change the versions of
the modules that it contains--all the modules that it contains.
If some of them don't change, e.g. if they are in use and a deferred
copy of them is scheduled but not done (etc.) then you could have the
situation where the update "installs" but the modules in it are not updated.
Hence, the update would be reoffered via AU or WU/MU.

The procedure you have been given would be designed to try to
make sure that the (implied) pre-requisites of the update are installed
before the update was installed (e.g. undo any partial update which
might have been done as a result of all the other attempts)
and also to do it manually in case part of the problem installing it is
the update agent you have been using.
