Unwanted Microsoft folder opening at startup in General Discussion

  Question
  Hi,

I'm having a Microsoft folder ("C:\Program Files\Microsoft") after startup.
Inside the folder are two other folders "Office Live" and "Search Enhancement
Pack." I don't know what happened that out of nowhere this folder is now
opening.

This folder started to launch after a small power failure yesterday. When I
turned on my computer, up popped the folder. I can close the folder but I
don't want to do that every time my machine boots up. Is there a way to stop
this?

(BTW I installed Microsoft Security Essentials yesterday. Could it be that
OneCare was preventing this folder to launch at start up? I did reboot the
machine after I installed MSE, so it might not be related?)

In the Start > Startup folder I have "Microsoft Office" and "Windows Search"

  Cirrus,

START | RUN | Type 'regedit'

Navigate to:

Current User:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

All Users:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

In the right pane, do you have a string value pointing to the folder that is
opening? If so, delete that entry

Close the registry editor

Others may point you to the 'boys toy' MSCONFIG. All that will do is create
a RUN- key & place the entry in there if unticked. If you use the registry
editor then you're not adding it to no RUN- key

  Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I'm afraid I did not find a string value pointing to
the folder. I'm including two screenshots of the entries in the locations you
pointed me to to see if you can see something I missed.

Thanks again.

  Cirrus,

Then it must be one of those endtries in the startup folder

Is it only happening on your profile or everyone else's?

If yours then just go to the startup folder & delete the Microsoft entry. If
all users then right-click the START button | Properties. Double click
Programs... to get to the All Users startup folder & look for the entry
there

Also, in the registry I saw you had two entries that can safely be deleted:

1) Adobe Speed Launcher
2) Quick Time Task

Feedback results please

  SPAMCOP User,

I have only one account on this computer (home) but created a new account
and the same folder launched after startup.

I right-clicked Start and selected Properties but the Taskbar properties
opened, so I selected "Open all users." Then I double-clicked on Programs and
went to "startup" folder but found no entries for Microsoft, just "Microsoft
Office" and "Windows Search"

Thanks for the tip on QuickTime and Adobe Reader. I actually had those
turned off with OneCare's startup manager but since I uninstalled it to
install Microsoft Security Essentials.

Notice that the MSSE entry is the only one that has a space in the path,
that doesn't have quotes around the path. So, the path is seen as:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft

rather than:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Essentials\msseces.exe -hide

Why it picked up "Program files" as a correct path, I don't know..

But if you edit that line so it has quotes around the path, it might work:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Essentials\msseces.exe" -hide

Notice the switch, "-hide" is not within quotes.

  Hi elmo,

Joe, dude, I think you nailed it! I added quotes to the path, rebooted and
the Microsoft folder did not launch! Awesome!

Thanks for your assistance. Much appreciated.
