E-Mail Merge With Word 2007 and Vista's Windows Mail in Word Mail
 |  Edit my Profile  |  Help

Mike McCollister 12/30/2007 6:27 PM PST

I have been using Microsoft Word 2003 for a while to do some e-mail mail
merge with Outlook Express for years. Well, I just switched over my e-mail
to my Vista machine with Office 2007. For some reason Word does not see that
Windows Mail exists and that under the "Finish and Merge" button the "Send
E-mail Messages..." button is grayed out. Does anyone know how to get this
to work?

Thanks,

Mike

  OK, I found this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918792

Now that I have done this the "Send E-mail Messages..." is not grayed out
but when I try to send something nothing happens. Windows Mail does not seem
to see that Word is trying to send an e-mail.

Anyone have a solution to this?

Thanks,

Mike

OK. I have found that if I select my mail format to be plain text instead of
HTML then it works OK. That is fine as I want to send it as plain text.
However, I can't get the plain text option to stick when I close and open
word again. Any ideas on how to make this feature stick?

Thanks,

Mike

Did you ever figure out how to make it send as HTML?

You can only send as HTML using the "full" Outlook, not Outlook Express or
Windows Mail.

The following from fellow MVP, Peter Jamieson:

Quote

Try Windows Vista Start Button->Default Programs->Set your default programs,
select Windows Mail then click "Set this program as default". Or go to the
Default Programs option in Control Panel.

You can only use the "send as plain text" and "send as attachment" options
with Windows Mail, and you do get a security question for each message. You
cannot use HTML mail - if you do, they just disappear without warning.

It works here, anyway :-)

In addition to Doug's message, if the option is greyed out, you need to
follow that 918792 article, whether you are using Outlook, Outlook Express
or Windows Mail.

If you are running a 64-bit version of Vista you might need to put the
entries described in that article under the following registry key as well
(or instead):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows Messaging
Subsystem

I did all this, but still the send email option in mail merge is greyed out.
Also did everything that was mentioned in the article.

Unfortunately I do not know any other way to ungrey that option. My only
suggestions are:
a. double-check that you have created the correct registry entries
b. restart Windows and Word
c. if your copy of Word/Office is still under warranty, contact Microsoft
support directly (we are just volunteers).
