Are you using Windows 2000? If yes, it seems it is because Windows Defender
do not support Windows 2000 anymore.
Please see System Requirement for Windows Defender:
Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or later; Windows XP Service Pack 2 or
later
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/about/sysreq.mspx

  Peggy,

OK. Windows Defender (Beta 2) expires December 31, 2006
What version of Windows Defender is installed? Ensure that it is not
expired. You can get the new one from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en
Note: If you have version 1.1.1592.0, you must first manually uninstall
Windows Defender before you can install this newer version.

If you have the current version, please wait for awhile until Microsoft
provide another update to extend the expiration and/or provide a new
version/build that will fix this issue.

Regards,

  Peggy,

There are specific news groups created for Windows Defender:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?guid=eaba02aa-71e3-40a2-84cd-5387cf029cd6

The General newsgroup can be found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.private.security.spyware.general&cat=en_US_9173989c-2d50-476c-b0dd-d72390cf0620&lang=en&cr=US

Best to post your query there instead of to a Windows Update newsgroup.
