  Suggestion for Microsoft
Hi there, I have the sound device "SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC"
(STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio) which came with my Dell Dimension 5150.

Some times some of the Windows Sounds don't function correctly. They loop
(have the broken record effect). The Default Beep (Windows Ding.wav) is one
that tends to have this problem when prompted. It also plays slightly
delayed, performs like the system is using a lot of system resources for a
moment.

Appart from this minor issue my sound seems to work fine.

I am running a clean install of Windows Vista Home Premium SP1.

Driver details:

Provider: SigmaTel
Date: 12/01/2007
Driver Version: 6.10.0.5343

Anyone tested this on this system?

I had the same audio driver on my Dell XPS 410 before I was able to upgrade
to Vista SP-1, and I had the same problem with audio hiccups. I did like
many others, since Dell doesn't seem interested in giving us an updated
SigmaTel driver: I uninstalled (and deleted files) the SigmaTel audio
drivers using the Device Manager and uninstalled anything to do with
SigmaTel in Programs and Features. Then I rebooted, and Vista installed
Microsoft HD audio drivers and all is well.

This may work for you; however, I wonder if you have a "service" running
when you have your audio problems. If Vista is in the middle of a defrag or
Windows Defender scan, etc., that may make your audio frizzle a bit.

Bottom line, you can't go wrong by ridding yourself of SigmaTel and using
the MS driver. At the very least, you can always go back to the Dell site
and reinstall Sigmatel.

Dell finally released a driver for the XPS410 that allowed SP1 to install
6.10.0.5866
dated 1/15/2008
SIGMATEL_STAC_92XX-C-Major-H_A06_R182475.exe

I downloaded it on 6/6/2008

Thanks for the info, Michael. Wish it had been about 10 days earlier! But
I wonder why the 1/15/2008 date if it was recently released. Guess I don't
understand these things.
