Banca di Credito Cooperativo Sant’Elena Banca di Credito Cooperativo SantElena brings its Open Source experience to an end and chooses Microsoft Office 2010

Comparative analysis of total operating costs did not show any real savings in using the Open Source solution, while greater integration with the application infrastructure and the systems used by the bank’s clients provided another reason to migrate all the workstations from OpenOffice to the Microsoft platform. Microsoft Office 2010 solved all document compatibility problems and difficulties in customising OpenOffice features, which speeded up procedures and increased users’ operating efficiency.

Goals

Overcoming the difficulties and inefficiencies of Open Source software
Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Sant’Elena believes technology development is a key element for efficiency and quality in customer relations. OpenOffice had been chosen as the main office automation tool in the past mainly for economic reasons, but various

inefficiencies led Management to consider a change of platform. The Open Source solution caused numerous document compatibility issues and meant file format conversions were frequently necessary. Developing customised functions was very complex, and full integration with the application infrastructure was impossible. The option of upgrading to the latest version of OpenOffice would not have solved these problems and would have involved a change of interface and the necessary user training. The consultancy firm ADVNET presented an OpenOffice and Microsoft Office 2010 cost-benefit comparison to the Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Sant’Elena management, and convinced them of the value of migrating to Microsoft technology.

Solution

Application design based on users’ needs
With the help of Microsoft Italia, ADVNET gave practical demonstrations of working with Office 2010 in the specific contexts of the branches and central office, segmenting users according to their needs and defining a differentiated implementation plan with 60 workstations on Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 and 100 workstations using Microsoft Office Standard 2010. ADVNET then managed the roll-out of the new software in all the branches and training for users needing to use the more advanced features. Most users were already familiar with the Office 2010 interface, and the online learning tools provided by Microsoft meant the changeover could be managed without training costs. The transition phase was short, and everyday operations benefited from a platform change based on a precise cost-benefit analysis.

“This bank is very well known in the Triveneto area, also for its role in promoting innovative solutions”, pointed out Sales & Marketing Director at ADVNET Daniele Masi. “The switch from OpenOffice to Microsoft Office 2010 further confirms a precise systems development strategy based on a concept of targeted investment rather than short-term savings”.

Benefits

New horizons for process integration and efficiency
The focus on the client’s specific needs and the flexible commercial offer from Microsoft and ADVNET enabled Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Sant’Elena to upgrade its technology quickly and simply, cutting training costs and significantly increasing process efficiency. Advanced document search features, improved worksheet and database link management, simple-to-write macro commands and compatibility with all application development and management tools delivered concrete benefits at all the functional levels in the organisation. Simple data access and application integration, especially with messaging and teamwork tools, will further increase productivity in the exchange of information, in line with business intelligence criteria which were impossible to implement with the previous Open Source tools.

“Our experience with OpenOffice revealed numerous problems of compatibility and integration with the systems used by many of our clients, which could have caused critical issues in their relationship with our bank”, said Filippo Baccan, IT and Organisation Director at Banca di Credito Cooperativo Sant’Elena. “After an in-depth analysis we decided to move to Microsoft Office 2010, solving all our interoperability problems and opening up important new opportunities for innovation in our internal processes and customer relations”.
