Dubai-based Al Suwaidi Computer Company is an industry leader. It has four IT divisions, three office supply divisions, and a Reprographics Center. Its staff of 350 ensures that its customers have the most efficient hardware, software, and networking technologies. Many of its customers are small businesses. In the face of competition, the customers were facing face mounting pressure to cut costs while maximizing productivity. As a result, they look for leading-edge technologies that provide real, tangible benefits—avoiding costly solutions that can cut into profits. By deploying the Windows® 7 operating system, Al Suwaidi was able to reduce downtime with faster systems, enhance flexibility, and decrease energy expenses for its customers.
Al Suwaidi’s customers needed more efficient systems that could help cut down on idle time and facilitate better productivity. Simply booting up or resuming PCs ate into valuable work time, and when customers needed to find important network files and folders, they would spend chunks of their day searching, instead of working on their projects. Plus, because Al Suwaidi often helps its customers on-site, the company also needed to find a way to enhance essential processes like network functionality and access.
||Anything we can do to lower costs and improve productivity for customers will improve our position in this market. Windows 7 is helping us do both.

What’s more, legacy systems that used excessive amount of energy were putting pressure on bottom line profits, and training new employees was taking months due to the time required for creating and updating training manuals.
It became clear to Al Suwaidi that it needed to find a solution to dramatically improve productivity – from the desktop to the network to the help desk – in the most cost-effective way possible.
To accomplish this, Al Suwaidi, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, migrated operating systems, both in-house and for its customers, to Windows 7 Professional. Since Windows 7 is a fast, easy-to-use, and energy-efficient technology, the company was able to dramatically improve its customers’ day-to-day operations. As Mike Nash, Vice President of Windows Product Management says, “Windows 7 is in every way a major effort in design, engineering, and innovation.”
Windows 7 is designed to significantly improve speed, efficiency, and ultimately, productivity. Users spend less time waiting for boot and resume, so they have more time to add to bottom line results. Al Suwaidi also uses this to its own advantage when addressing customer challenges, solving problems faster than ever before. “Windows 7 allows for faster boot-up and response times, so we spend less time waiting for the computer to become operational and more time resolving customer issues quickly,” said Dekshin.
Windows 7 also helps Al Suwaidi’s customers shave time off tasks like locating important files with its intuitive search capabilities. The customers have also seen a dramatic reduction in energy consumption due to the efficient design of Windows 7.
Accelerating Everyday Tasks
The Windows 7 ReadyBoostTM feature helps PCs respond faster, so users do not spend time waiting while their computer boots up or resumes after being idle. Windows Desktop Search and Jump Lists help facilitate faster, easier file searches. All users have to do is type in a question or phrase in the Instant Search box to find files and folders across the network. If they want to access a recently viewed file or store commonly used files together, they can see everything in a single pane with Jump Lists.
Since Windows 7 provides intuitive functions like Network Connection Wizard, which helps simplify PC connections to wireless, VPN, and other networks, and Location Aware Printing, which automatically detects default printers, Al Suwaidi can access customer resources more easily to solve customer technical problems in less time, giving them more time to work towards strategic business goals.
Part of being efficient means not only having more time for productivity, but also having systems that alleviate cost pressures by reducing energy consumption. With Power Management, users can expect just that. This feature helps PCs cut down on energy consumption by powering down unused components, which also helps to extend laptop battery life.
“A lot of the work we do is performed off-site at the customer’s office,” said Dekshin. “With Network Connection Wizard, Power Management, and Location Aware Printing, we can quickly establish optimal working conditions in those environments. This is great for us and our customers.”
Power Management in particular is a critical enhancement for Al Suwaidi, which relies on laptop use for remote problem-solving activities. “Windows 7 provides dramatically increased battery life,” remarked Dekshin. “This is so much better than anything we’ve seen before. It saves money, and the planet.”
Dekshin also pointed out that all the performance upgrades have significantly reduced his company’s operating costs – a feature also realized by its customers. “We’ve seen a huge increase in performance with Windows 7, without having to spend any additional money,” Dekshin said. “With better power management, we’re talking about $105,000 in savings for our company alone,” he added.
The Partner Opportunity
Al Suwaidi knows that Windows 7 will help them take advantage of more business opportunities as it continues to expand. The company has already begun to capitalize on an unexpected benefit of Windows 7 – the ability to offer better training for its customers using the Problem Steps Recorder. Problem Steps Recorder lets users record the steps involved in a process, or that cause errors, by taking screen-by-screen snapshots, to which users can apply detailed notes.
“Before Windows 7, we would spend months working on training manuals or teaching customers one-on-one how to perform certain tasks. Now, with Problem Steps Recorder, we have the perfect tool to build quick and simple ‘how-to’ guides for our customers in a matter of days – sometimes in just a few hours. This feature provides a whole new twist to the kinds of solutions we can provide,” Dekshin said.
By helping to bring its customers new levels of speed and more intuitive functions, Al Suwaidi has helped them rise above the fray of the competition. In addition, Al Suwaidi itself has found new ways to boost its own productivity and help customers more quickly than before - a win-win for everyone.
