Aluminium Bahrain Aluminium Manufacturer Cuts Costs and Becomes Agile Using a Powerful Cloud Solution

"Windows Server 2012 utilises advanced cloud technology and is expected to provide us with greater agility, availability and flexibility. It has the additional advantage of having the ability to quickly build and maintain virtual environments at a minimal cost."
Esam Hadi, Information Technology Manager, Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (ALBA)

Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba) is one of the largest and most modern aluminium manufacturers in the world. Known for its technological strength and innovative policies, the firm is widely regarded as one of the top ten global performers. By deploying Windows Server 2012, Alba is able to fulfill the company’s mission to provide IT services to the organisation with speed, agility and simplicity using a flexible and highly scalable cloud solution while cutting costs.

Business Needs

As one of the world’s largest single site aluminium smelters, the company produces high-quality primary aluminium products such as extrusion ingots, standard ingots, rolling slabs and liquid metal. Because of its technological expertise, Alba’s products are being used in the manufacture of a wide range of materials - from cookware, automotive products to buildings and lot more.

The proper running of IT services and applications for a company of Alba’s size is critical for the smooth functioning of all departments since the production and process systems are automated.

Simply relying on physical servers to support the needs of the business was becoming a challenge because costs related to hardware, licensing, maintenance and human resource were becoming prohibitive. Hence, to support Alba’s goal of delivering IT services with speed, agility and simplicity, a versatile and powerful cloud solution was required that would:

  • provide high availability and greater agility

  • reduced licensing, operational and infrastructure costs

  • reduce the number of physical servers

  • respond quickly to changing business needs

  • remain easy to maintain

Solution

After deliberating over several cloud computing solutions on the market, Alba took the decision to select Windows Server 2012.

Information Technology Manager, Esam Hadi had this to say about the selection: “Windows Server 2012 utilises advanced cloud technology and is expected to provide us with greater agility, availability and flexibility. It has the additional advantage of having the ability to quickly build and deploy virtual environments at a minimal cost.”

To ensure that there exists a proper fit with the needs of the business, the IT Department tested several scenarios dealing with density and scale that involved:

  • Windows Server Hyper-V

  • Hyper-V Replica

  • Hyper-V Live Migration

  • Hyper-V Storage Migration

The proof of concept (POC) took 3 months and initially involved 2 Hyper-V hosts, which were later extended to 4 hosts. Results of the tests conducted during this period showed a very high level of stability, which made the IT Department confident of deploying Windows Server 2012 to production.

Benefits
  • 75% reduction in work hours

  • Hyper-V Replica provides a disaster-recovery solution for VMs that doesn't require a SAN storage

  • Minimises downtime using cluster – aware updating

  • Able to move entire banks of VMS simultaneously with no downtime

  • Easy to maintain

  • More focus on business needs rather than the IT infrastructure

  • Dynamic private cloud solution
