Hvad er det primære formål med shared services?
Shared services are high-value, resource-intensive services that are grouped together. Each server farm can have from one to many shared services, as well as share among several farms.

There are many customer benefits of shared services. First, there is resource optimization, by allowing servers within the farm to have access to all the necessary services. Second, there is security isolation, in that the services are isolated from the portal. Along with flexibility, shared services allow for delegation of administration. Power users can administer a Shared Service instance without having central administration rights. Finally, shared services can be used across farms.

The Office SharePoint Server infrastructure relies on shared services for site and cross-site-level Office Server features. Now it is possible to separate services from portals, while removing the scale limitation for the number of portals allowed. In addition, shared services allow for services to act together as a group.

The Shared Services Provider, or SSP, provides the infrastructure for shared services. There are three components of this infrastructure: SSP administrative site, SSP databases, and shared web service hosting.

Shared Services includes Office Server Search, directory import, user profile synch, audiences, targeting, business data catalog, Excel calculation service, and usage reporting.

There is an SSP default, which is the first SSP. An administrator can change this default SSP to another SSP if wanted; however, the default SSP can’t be deleted. New and existing web applications are auto-associated.

Content web applications are almost always associated to only one SSP. The security implications of this association mean that the content application pool is granted rights across the SSP. There is also disassociation, meaning that accounts are not auto-cleaned up. Furthermore, content web application actions are auto-started and stopped. For the search functionality, it adds a start address to the portal content source.
