Overview

You are downloading the Windows Home Server Evaluation Edition DVD. This software is intended for evaluation purposes only.

IMPORTANT: You will need to install this software on a dedicated machine that will function only as your home server. When you install Windows Home Server software all of the existing programs and files on the hard drives will be deleted. In order to preserve any existing data, you must ensure you have a back up copy on a separate computer or external hard drive prior to installation of the Windows Home Server software.

You must accept the License Terms presented during the setup program to use the Windows Home Server Evaluation Edition. By downloading and using the software, you consent to the license terms. If you do not accept the License Terms, you are not authorized to use the software. As a reminder, when you burn the software onto a DVD, the license terms prohibit you from transferring that disk to anyone else.

Please refer to the Windows Home Server Product Guide and the Windows Home Server Release Documentation, available from the Windows Home Server Support Page, for instructions regarding installation and functionality of the software.

    Instructions

    1. Click Download to start the download.

    2. Click Save to save the download of the ISO file to your computer.

    3. When the download completes, you need to burn the ISO file to a new DVD.
o Downloading ISO files and burning DVDs can be problematic. To increase your odds for success, please do the following when downloading and burning the Windows Home Server ISO file to a DVD:

o Use a CRC check utility to verify the ISO file you downloaded was not corrupted. You can find a lot of free CRC utilities on the web if you do not have one. Microsoft generates a CRC32 Checksum (meaning it was generated using the CRC32 algorithm). The CRC value for the ISO file you downloaded should be 0x4EE769E3.

o Do not burn your DVDs at the "maximum" write speed. Use a lower speed setting in your DVD burning software to reduce the risk of errors.

o Use a DVD burning software package that supports verification.

o Use high quality DVD media that is matched to your DVD writer and reader.

o Ensure that the BIOS in your home server is the most recent available. In some cases, a system will not boot the Windows Home Server Evaluation Edition media until the BIOS is upgraded.

    4. Power on the computer that will be the home server and boot from the Windows Home Server Installation DVD in the DVD drive. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

NOTE: Windows Home Server setup has been extensively tested. If you encounter any failures during setup, it is most likely due to a DVD problem or an unsupported hardware configuration.

    5. To install the Windows Home Server Connector software on a home computer, you need to open a Web browser on a home computer, and type http://servername:55000, where "servername" is the name you gave your home server. You do not need the Windows Home Server Connector CD to install the Connector software. Repeat the software installation on each network computer.

    6. You may now use the Evaluation Edition for 30 days. To use the Evaluation Edition for the full 120-day period, you need to register at the Windows Home Server Connect site and acquire a product key for the Windows Home Server Evaluation Edition software.

Uninstall notice: The Windows Home Server Evaluation Edition expires 120 days after installation, if activated. Please refer to the product documentation before installing the fully licensed version of Windows Home Server.

If you have any questions about the installation of the Windows Home Server Evaluation Edition, then please post them in the Windows Home Server - Hardware and Installation Community Forum.
