Overview

This IDC White Paper explores the transition from 32-bit to 64-bit computing in a
Windows environment. With the existing installed base of 32-bit server hardware
being replaced by 64-bit hardware, the stage is being set for an operating system
transition to follow. This White Paper considers the drivers, the benefits, and the
challenges that will influence this transition.

As part of the research for this White Paper, IDC interviewed selected Microsoft
customers and ISV partners to better understand their usage of and plans for x86
64-bit computing. Names of potential interviewees were given to IDC by Microsoft.
Based on the customer interviews, IDC constructed an ROI model that is discussed
later in this paper. Case studies of selected companies are also included.

"One of the biggest missed opportunities among today’s customer base may be the
lack of use of 64-bit x86 Windows Server solutions to boost performance, scale, and
utilization rates."
