Forms 2.0 Control Security Patch

Brief Description
This patch fixes a bug in our Forms 2.0 ActiveX control (fm20*.dll). Using the Forms 2.0 TextBox/ComboBox control on a web page, text on the local clipboard can be read or viewed remotely.

Overview

Now available for download, this patch addresses a vulnerability that occurs when the Forms 2.0 Control (Fm20*.dll) is available on a user's system. Forms 2.0 is an Active X® control that allows users to create customized dialog boxes. A malicious hacker could use the Forms 2.0 Control to read or export text on a user's Clipboard when that user visits a Web site set up by the malicious hacker or opens an e-mail created by the hacker.


The Forms 2.0 Control Security Patch prevents a hacker from exploiting this vulnerability. Those who install the patch will not lose functionality and will still be able to use their Clipboard. Developers who have built Visual Basic® for Applications solutions using the Forms 2.0 Control will still be able to paste into text boxes and combo boxes.


To determine whether you need to download and install the security fix, right-click the Fm20.dll file in your >drive>:\Windows\System folder and choose Properties on the shortcut menu. If the file date of your FM20.dll file is earlier than January 11, 1999 (1/11/99), you should download and install the security fix.

This control is part of Visual Basic for Applications and is installed with any of the following applications: Microsoft Office 97 and its individual applications; Outlook® 98; Project 98; Visual Basic 5.0; and any third party application that hosts Visual Basic for Applications 5.0.

Before installing this patch you must update your system with Office 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2), if you have not already done so. Otherwise, if you install this patch now and then install Office 97 SR-2 at a later date you will have to reinstall this patch.

To install this download

  1. You may want to print this page to use as a reference when you are offline.
  2. Ensure that you have installed Office 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2). To confirm this, open an Office program and then click the About Microsoft command on the Help menu. You should see Microsoft 97 SR-2 as your version of the application.
  3. Download the file from this page by clicking the Download link above and following the instructions in the dialog boxes.
  4. Double-click the Fm2paste.exe program file on your hard disk to start the Setup program.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.


Instructions for use:

Once the installation is complete, your system files will be updated.

To remove this download:

This patch cannot be uninstalled or removed. The files updated by the patch are an integral part of your operating system, and cannot be removed without risking damage to your operating system. In order to return your Office files to their previous state, you must uninstall Office and then re-install it.
