Overview

Microsoft has recently become aware of a potential Excel XLM macro security vulnerability. When an XLM macro sheet is saved as a text file and the text file is then opened into Excel, users may not receive the usual macro warning dialog box. This vulnerability could allow malicious code stored within the XLM macro sheet to perform harmful acts, including deleting files. This update corrects the XLM macro security vulnerability by always displaying the macro warning dialog box when you open an XLM macro sheet, even if the XLM was saved as a text file. For more information, read the Microsoft Knowledge Base article (Q255606) XL97: No Macro Virus Warning Opening Text File Containing XLM.

Note   This security update, which requires that you first install Office 97 SR-2, includes the XLM macro security update, the Microsoft Excel 97 SYLK File Security Update, and the Microsoft Excel 97 Programmatic Text Export Update. For additional information on the Excel 97 SYLK file security update, please see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article (Q241902) XL97: Macro Virus Warning Does Not Appear When Opening SYLK File That Contains XLM Code. For additional information on the Excel 97 programmatic text export update please see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article (Q247801) XL97: Programmatically Exporting Text File Truncates Dates.

If you are using Office 2000, this vulnerability has been addressed in Service Release 1 (SR-1). For more information, see Office 2000 Service Release (SR-1a) Frequently Asked Questions or the Microsoft Knowledge Base article (Q255605) XL2000: No Macro Virus Warning Opening Text File Containing XLM.
