Overview

Microsoft has released an update that addresses the "Original Keyboard Layout Appears after You Configure a New Default Input Method Editor (IME)" issue in Windows XP, and is discussed in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 318388. Download now to prevent the origianl keyboard layout from appearing after you configure a new default Input Method Editor.

This problem may occur if the following conditions exist:
  • A user without administrator permissions is logged on to Windows.
  • The default keyboard item in the registry does not match the default keyboard layout.

This problem occurs because the Msctf.dll file that is running under the permissions of the user account does not have sufficient permissions to evaluate the new default keyboard layout from the registry.

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing at a later time, to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this fix.
