Overview

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) is a free, easy-to-use graphical management tool for managing SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services. SSMSE can also manage instances of the SQL Server Database Engine created by any edition of SQL Server 2005.

Note: SSMSE cannot manage SQL Server Analysis Services, Integration Services, Notification Services, Reporting Services, SQL Server Agent, or SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition.

System Requirements

  • Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1; Windows Vista; Windows XP Service Pack 2
  • Computer with Intel or compatible Pentium III 600 MHz or faster processor (1 GHz or faster is recommended.)
  • Minimum of 192 MB of RAM (512 MB or more is recommended.)
  • 100 MB of available hard disk space

Instructions

Note: You must have administrative rights on the computer to install SSMSE.

    Step 1: For 32-bit platforms, download and install the 32-bit version of Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. For 64-bit platforms (x64 and EMT64 only), download and install the 64-bit version of Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.

    Note: If you have already installed SQL Server 2005 or Visual Studio 2005, you already have Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.

    Step 2: Download and install Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0.

    Note: If you have already installed SQL Server 2005, you already have MSXML 6.0.

    Step 3: Download SSMSE by clicking the SQLServer2005_SSMSEE.msi link later on this page. To start the installation immediately, click Run. To install SSMSE at a later time, click Save.

    Step 4: Follow the installation instructions provided in the Readme.
