You need this download if you would like to replace some of your existing Microsoft Visio 2000 Unified Modeling Language (UML) shapes with shapes you can manually resize.

To install this download
- You may want to print this page to use as a reference when you are offline.
- Download the file from this page by clicking the Download link above and then following the instructions in the dialog boxes.
- If you choose Save this program to disk, specify a location for storing the file (UML.exe) on your computer, and then go to step 4 below.
If you choose Run this program from its current location, go directly to step 5 below. - When the download is complete, locate the file UML.exe and double-click it.
- Click Unzip, and then click Close.
- The new stencil files (UML Static Structure.vss, UML Use Case.vss, UML Component.vss, and UML Deployment.vss) will be placed in the folder C:\UML.
- To replace the original Visio 2000 UML stencil files with these new stencil files, copy the files into the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visio\Solutions\Software.
NOTE If you do not want to replace the original Visio 2000 UML stencil files, store the new files in a different location.
Instructions for use:
After you install the update, you can use the new resizable UML shapes by starting Microsoft Visio and then opening the UML Model Diagram solution.
TIP Always start a UML diagram by opening the UML Model Diagram template as described in step 2 below. UML shapes work properly only when you use them in the context of the UML Model Diagram template.- Start Visio.
- On the File menu, point to New, point to Software, and then click UML Model Diagram.
NOTE If you installed the new UML stencil files to a location other than the folder Microsoft Visio\Solutions\Software, follow the steps above to open the UML Model Diagram template. Then, on the File menu, point to Stencils, and then click Open Stencil. Locate the new stencil you want to open, and then click Open.
To resize a shape
- Drag a shape from a stencil and drop it on the drawing page.
- Select the shape.
- Place the pointer over one of the shape's green selection handles. When the pointer becomes a two-headed arrow, drag until the shape is the size you want.
To remove this download:
- Delete the following files from the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visio\Solutions\Software: UML Static Structure.vss, UML Use Case.vss, UML Component.vss, and UML Deployment.vss.
- Start Microsoft Visio. On the File menu, point to New, point to Software, and then click UML Model Diagram.
- In the Visio Installation Manager dialog box, click Install to install the original UML stencils.
You may be prompted to insert the Microsoft Visio 2000 CD.
NOTE If you installed the new UML stencil files to a location other than the folder Microsoft Visio\Solutions\Software, do not follow the three steps above.
