Optimized specifically for the Macintosh, the player provides intuitive design, reliable performance, and compatibility with most popular Macintosh models and system software.

High-Quality Experience
Windows Media Player supports that latest versions of the Windows Media codecs, which means you will experience the best quality audio and video. Windows Media Audio delivers files that are half the size of MP3 files, delivering CD-quality audio at only 64 kbps. Our video codecs provide near-VHS at only 250 kbps.

Optimized for Mac
Windows Media Player for Mac has been designed specifically for the Macintosh platform. The release sports a new, easy-to-use design and enables users to directly access the best content on WindowsMedia.com. In addition to the default look and feel, there are two additional skins, which include a mini-skin for audio-only.

Support for Digital Rights Management
Plays secure content protected with Microsoft Windows Media Rights Manager version 1.3, which is digital rights management (DRM) technology.

  • Apple Mac OS 8.1 or later (Mac OS 8.6 or later recommended)
  • PowerPC 603e 180 MHz or higher processor
  • 32 megabytes (MB) or higher of RAM
  • Virtual Memory turned on
  • 10 MB of free hard disk space
  • Monitor color depth of 256 colors (Millions of colors recommended)
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0.1 or later (Internet Explorer 5 or later recommended), Netscape Navigator 4.x (PowerPC version), Netscape Communicator 4.0 or later (PowerPC version), or America Online for Macintosh 4.0 or 5.0

Instructions

Note: Before installing this version of the Player, you must uninstall previous versions from your system.
  1. Click the Download link to start the download, or choose a different language from the drop-down list and click Go.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • To start the installation immediately, click Open or Run this program from its current location.
    • To copy the download to your computer for installation at a later time, click Save or Save this program to disk.
      Note: Windows Media Player for Mac will download to the download location specified in your browser. The default location is the desktop. You will need to use StuffIt Expander to decompress Windows Media Player for Mac OS X. You can get StuffIt Expander from Aladdin Systems.
  3. Double-click the installer icon.
