Overview
The Microsoft® Excel Virus Search Version 2.0 add-in is a tool that protects users against the Excel Macro/Laroux and Laroux B macro viruses.
Laroux
In July 1996, Microsoft learned that Microsoft Excel was the target of a non-destructive, non-harmful macro virus called Excel Macro/Laroux. This macro does not harm data but does replicate. In November 1996, a variation of the virus called Laroux B was reported. Laroux is the only replicating macro virus ever discovered that affects Microsoft Excel. Laroux affects documents created in Microsoft Excel 5.0 for Windows®95 and Windows NT®, Microsoft Excel 7.x for Windows 95 and Windows NT and Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows 95 and Windows NT.
Though Laroux does not harm data, Microsoft has moved quickly to develop a tool to address the problem. The Microsoft Excel Virus Search 2.0 Add-in developed by Microsoft will automatically detect and remove Laroux from infected Microsoft Excel workbooks when the user opens the infected file.

- Double-click the xlscan97.exe program file on your hard disk to start the Setup program.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
Instructions for use:
The Microsoft Excel Virus Search 2.0 Add-in developed by Microsoft will automatically detect and remove Laroux from infected Microsoft Excel workbooks when the user opens the infected file.
To remove this download:
- From the Start menu, point to the Settings entry, and choose Control Panel. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- In the list on the Install/Uninstall tab, find the entry Microsoft Excel 97 Laroux Virus Scanner (Remove Only), and highlight it. Click Add/Remove.
- When it asks you if you are sure you want to remove the application, click Yes.
- When it finishes removing the program, click OK on the confirmation dialog box.
