Overview

Note Before installing this patch you must update your system with Office 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2) if you have not already done so. Otherwise, if you install this patch now and then install Office 97 SR-2 at a later date you will have to reinstall this patch.


All users should make sure that they know the purpose of attachments before opening them. Currently, users that have attachment security set to high within Microsoft Outlook's® security settings will receive a warning before opening attachments.


Now available for download, the following patch will increase the security protection provided by Outlook 97 for certain types of email attachments. Once installed, this patch will change the attachment dialog box when certain attachments such as executables are opened, so that customers see more explicit warning language and will be required to save the attachment to the file system before opening it. This patch can help you avoid accidentally releasing viruses that hide in .exe files. It is important to note that saving the attachment to the file system does not automatically remove any virus that may be present. Before opening the attachment it is imperative you first scan it using an updated anti-virus software program.

To install this download

  4. Double-click the O97attch.exe program file on your hard disk to start the setup program.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.


Instructions for use:

Once you have gone through the installation process, simply use Outlook 97 as usual. This update does not require you to activate it.

To remove this download:

There is no Uninstall utility on this update. The files installed will become an integral part of your operating system, and cannot be removed without risking damage to your operating system.
