Overview
Synchronization Services lets you synchronize data from disparate sources over two-tier, N-tier, and service-based architectures. Instead of only replicating a database and its schema, the Synchronization Services application programming interface (API) provides a set of components to synchronize data between data services and a local store. Applications are increasingly used on mobile clients, such as portable computers and devices, that do not have a consistent or reliable network connection to a central server. It is important for these applications to work against a local copy of data on the client. Equally important is the need to synchronize the local copy of the data with a central server when a network connection is available. The Synchronization Services API is modeled after the ADO.NET data access APIs and gives you an intuitive way to synchronize data. It makes building applications for occasionally connected environments a logical extension of building applications where you can depend on a consistent network connection.

Microsoft .NET Framework: The Help viewer used by Books Online requires the Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0. Download one of the following versions of the .NET Framework 2.0:
Windows Installer: Windows Installer 3.0 is required to install Books Online. Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and Windows XP Service Pack 2 both include Windows Installer 3.0. For all other operating systems, you must first download and install Windows Installer 3.0.
To download Synchronization Services Books Online:
Install the .NET Framework 2.0 if you do not have it installed on your computer. Download one of the versions listed above in the System Requirements section.
Click SyncServicesBOL-ENU.msi from the Files In This Download section.
To begin installation immediately, click Open. To save the .msi file for installation at a later time, click Save.
During installation, follow the steps in the installer.
After you install Synchronization Services Books Online, it is available on the Start menu as a stand-alone Help collection, and it is also available through the Visual Studio 2008 documentation and F1 Help in Visual Studio 2008.
To download Synchronization Services samples:
Click SyncServicesSamples.exe from the Files In This Download section, and download the file to a temporary directory.
Run SyncServicesSamples.exe.
Enter an installation directory when you are prompted. We recommend that you unpack the files in the default directory.
After the package unpacks, open one of the sample directories under the installation directory.
Follow the instructions in the readme.txt file that is provided with each sample.
