OverviewSQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) is a complete suite of tools that dramatically cuts the effort, cost, and risk of migrating from Oracle to SQL Server. SSMA automates almost every aspect of the migration process including assessment, schema and data migration, business logic conversion, and validation. System Requirements- Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003; Windows Vista; Windows XP
SSMA is designed to work with Oracle 7.3 or later versions and all editions of SQL Server 2005 except SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
Requirements for the SSMA for Oracle client:
• WinZip
• Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 or a later version
• The Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 or a later version. The .NET Framework version 2.0 is available on the SQL Server 2005 product media. You can also obtain it from the .NET Framework Developer Center.
• The J# redistributable package, which is also available from the .NET Framework Developer Center.
• You can install the Oracle Client from the Oracle product media or from the Oracle Web site. For information about connectivity, see Connecting to Oracle.
• Access to and sufficient permissions on the computer that hosts the target instance of SQL Server 2005.
• 1 GB RAM.
Requirements for the SSMA for Oracle extension pack:
• SQL Server 2005
• Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 or a later version
• The Oracle OLE DB provider or Oracle ADO.NET provider and connectivity to the Oracle database server that contains the databases you want to migrate. You can install providers from the Oracle product media.

InstructionsAfter you download the latest version, you must extract the installation files from before you can install SSMA.
Installing the SSMA client
1. Extract all files from the SSMA compressed file.
2. If you are using WinZip, depending on the version that you have, you can either double-click the file, or right-click the file and select Extract All or Open in WinZip. Follow the instructions in the WinZip user interface to extract the files. If you are using another extraction utility, follow the directions for that utility.
3. Double-click ssma-for-oracle-n.msi, where n is the build number.
4. On the Welcome page, click Next.
5. If you do not have the prerequisites installed, a message will appear that indicates that you must first install required components. Make sure that you have installed all prerequisites, and then run the installation program again.
6. Read the End User License Agreement. If you agree, select I accept the terms in the license agreement, and then click Next.
7. Read the Usage Report Settings page, select or clear the feature reporting box, and then click Next.
8. On the Choose Setup Type page, click Typical.
9. Click Install.
The default installation location is C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Migration Assistant for Oracle.
In addition to the SSMA program files, you must also install the SSMA for Oracle extension pack on SQL Server 2005.
Installing the Extension Pack
You can install the extension pack any time before you migrate data to SQL Server 2005.
Important: To install the extension pack, you must be a member of the sysadmin server role on the instance of SQL Server.
1. Extract all files from the SSMA Zip file.
2. Depending on the version of WinZip you have, you can either double-click the file, or right-click the file and select Extract All or Open in WinZip. Follow the instructions in the WinZip user interface to extract the files.
3. Copy SSMA for Oracle Extension Pack.n.msi, where n is the build number, to the computer that is running SQL Server 2005.
4. Double-click SSMA for Oracle Extension Pack.n.msi.
5. On the Welcome page, click Next.
6. On the End User License Agreement page, read the license agreement. If you agree, select the I accept the terms in the license agreement check box, and then click Next.
7. On the Choose Setup Type page, click Typical.
8. On the Ready to Install page, click Install.
9. On the Completed the First Step of Installation page, click Next.
A new dialog box will appear, in which you select the instance of SQL Server for the extension pack installation.
10. Select the instance of SQL Server 2005 where you will be migrating Oracle schemas, and then click Next.
The default instance has the same name as the computer. Named instances will be followed by a backslash and the instance name.
11. On the connection page, select the authentication method and then click Next.
Windows Authentication will use your Windows credentials to try to log on to the instance of SQL Server. If you select SQL Server Authentication, you must enter a SQL Server login name and password.
12. On the next page, select Install Utilities Database n, where n is the version number, and then click Next.
The sysdb database is created and the user-defined functions and stored procedures are created in that database.
To install the utilities to another instance of SQL Server, select Yes, and then click Next. Or, to exit the wizard, click No. Top of page

SSMA is a FREE download, and is available for use by any customer or partner with no charge or any obligations. However, the product requires a license key for activation. The key can be obtained after quick and simple registration.
