Overview

Microsoft® Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Proofing Tools ensures that Office 2003 performs with complete functionality when you use Office 2003 Proofing Tools. Some of the fixes included with Service Pack 2 (SP2) have been previously released as separate updates. This service pack combines them into one update.

This service pack also includes updates previously released for Office 2003 Proofing Tools:

Office 2003 SP2 for Proofing Tools will install even if a publicly available update or service pack has already been installed on your computer.

Microsoft Office Communicator 2005 and Office 2003 SP2

If you are using Office Communicator 2005, you should exit Office Communicator by right-clicking on the Communicator icon in the system tray and choosing "Exit" prior to installing Office 2003 SP2. If you do not exit Communicator, you will be required to reboot your computer after Office 2003 SP2 has been installed. For more information, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article (905726): You are prompted to restart the computer when you install an update to the Mso.dll file on a computer that is running Microsoft Office Communicator.

If you have downloaded and run the file PTK2003SP2-kb887618-client-enu.exe and are being asked to insert the product CD, the Local Installation Source may have been removed or corrupted. You may need to repair your Local Installation Source. For instructions on repairing the Local Installation Source, see the article Change the Local Installation Source After the Installation. You should also try downloading and running the file PTK2003SP2-kb887618-fullfile-enu.exe. Installation of this file may be successful even if the Local Installation Source is missing or corrupt.

Important For complete Office 2003 SP2 functionality if you are using Office 2003 Proofing Tools, you will need to install both this download and Office 2003 Service Pack 2.

If you have Windows Installer version 3.0 you will need to upgrade to Windows Installer version 3.1. For more information, see the article (906323): The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the windows installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program" error message when you install Office 2003 Service Pack 2, or Setup does not finish and you receive no notification.

Installation instructions
To install this update, do one of the following:

Use the Microsoft Update or Office Update detection Web sites (recommended). Both sites automatically detect Office and prompt you to install updates and service packs that bring Office programs up to date.

Install only Office 2003 SP2 for Proofing Tools. To do this, follow these steps:

Download one of the two .exe files by using the links at the bottom of the page, and then save the file to your hard disk drive.
- PTK2003SP2-kb887618-client-enu.exe: You should download this file if you have access to your original product CD-ROM. You might need to provide the installation source during patch installation if you have previously updated your product.
- PTK2003SP2-kb887618-fullfile-enu.exe: Download this file if you do not have access to your original product CD-ROM or if you have experienced problems installing the PTK2003SP2-kb887618-client-enu.exe file.
It is recommended that you quit any programs you are running.

In Windows Explorer, double-click the .exe file that you saved to your hard disk drive, and follow the instructions on the screen.

After you install this update, use Office as you typically would.

To remove this download:

There is no uninstall feature for this download. For more information, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article (873125): You cannot remove service packs for Office 2003 products.
