OverviewSQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) for Sybase ASE is a complete suite of tools that dramatically cuts the effort, cost, and risk of migrating from Sybase ASE database to SQL Server. SSMA automates almost every aspect of the migration process including assessment, schema and data migration, business logic conversion.
With SSMA, IT organizations now have the freedom to move to SQL Server and take advantage of SQL Server's exceptional security, scalability, developer productivity, and the industry’s lowest total cost of ownership.
SSMA for Sybase ASE consists of a client tool that you use to migrate ASE databases to SQL Server, and an extension pack that contains tables and stored procedures to support migration and functions that replace Sybase ASE system function usage in migrated databases. Top of page

Requirements for the SSMA 2005 for Sybase ASE client:
• WinZip, or a similar utility, to unpack Zip archives.
• Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 or a later version
• The Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 or a later version. The .NET Framework version 2.0 is available on the SQL Server 2005 product media. You can also obtain it from the .NET Framework Developer Center.
• The Sybase OLE DB provider and connectivity to the Sybase ASE database server that contains the databases you want to migrate. You can install providers from the Sybase ASE product media.
• Access to and sufficient permissions on the computer that hosts the target instance of SQL Server 2005. SSMA 2005 for Sybase does not support migrating databases to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
• 1 GB RAM recommended.
Requirements for the SSMA 2005 for Sybase Extension Pack:
• SQL Server 2005. SSMA does not support SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
• Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 or a later version
• The Sybase OLE DB provider or Sybase ADO.NET provider, and connectivity to the Sybase ASE database server that contains the databases that you want to migrate. You can install providers from the Sybase ASE product media.

InstructionsSSMA 2005 for Sybase ASE is packaged as a .zip file. After downloading SSMA 2005 for Sybase.4.0.zip, you will extract two EXE files: SSMA 2005 for Sybase.4.0.Install.exe and SSMA 2005 for Sybase Extension Pack.4.0.Install.exe.
Installing the SSMA 2005 for Sybase
1. Download SSMA 2005 for Sybase.4.0.zip.
2. Extract all files from the compressed file
If you are using WinZip, depending on the version that you have, you can either double-click the file, or right-click the file and select Extract All or Open in WinZip. Follow the instructions in the WinZip user interface to extract the files. If you are using another extraction utility, follow the directions for that utility.
3. Double-click SSMA 2005 for Sybase.4.0.Install.exe.
4. On the Welcome page, click Next.
If you do not have the prerequisite Sybase OLE DB provider installed, a message will appear indicating that you must first install the providers. You can install the Sybase OLE DB provider from the Sybase ASE product media.
5. Read the license agreement. If you agree, select I accept the terms in the license agreement, and then click Next.
6. Read the Usage Report Settings page, select or clear the feature reporting box, and then click Next.
7. To install the client program and documentation, click Typical.
8. Click Install.
Installing the SSMA 2005 for Sybase Extension Pack
Installing the extension pack creates a new database, sysdb, on the instance of SQL Server 2005. The extension pack adds tables, stored procedures, and user-defined functions.
1. If you have not already done so, extract all files from SSMA 2005 for Sybase.4.0.zip.
If you are using WinZip, depending on the version that you have, you can either double-click the file, or right-click the file and select Extract All or Open in WinZip. Follow the instructions in the WinZip user interface to extract the files. If you are using another extraction utility, follow the directions for that utility.
2. Copy SSMA 2005 for Sybase Extension Pack.4.0.Install.exe, to the computer that hosts SQL Server 2005.
3. Double-click SSMA 2005 for Sybase Extension Pack.4.0.Install.exe.
4. On the Welcome page, click Next.
5. On the End User License Agreement page, read the license agreement. If you agree, select the I accept the terms in the license agreement check box, and then click Next.
6. On the Ready to Install page, click Install.
7. On the Completed the First Step of Installation page, click Next.
A new dialog box will appear, in which you select the instance of SQL Server for the extension pack installation.
8. Select the instance of SQL Server 2005 where you will be migrating Sybase ASE database, and then click Next.
The default instance has the same name as the computer. Named instances will be followed by a backslash and the instance name (NamedInstance\InstanceName).
9. On the Connection Parameters page, select the authentication method.
Windows Authentication will use your current Windows credentials to attempt to log on to the instance of SQL Server. If you select SQL Server Authentication, you must enter a SQL Server login name and password.
10. On the Manage Server page, select Install Utilities Database n, where n is the version number, and then click Next.
11. The sysdb database is created and the user-defined functions and stored procedures are created in that database.
If Install Tester Database option is checked the tester ssmatesterdb_syb database will be created.
12. To install the utilities to another instance of SQL Server, select Return to instances, and then click Next. Otherwise, click Exit to exit the wizard. Top of page
Additional InformationLicensing
SSMA is a FREE download, and is available for use by any customer or partner with no charge or any obligations. However, the product requires a license key for activation. The key can be obtained after quick and simple registration. Microsoft reserves the right to use an e-mail address or phone number provided during registration in order to contact a customer regarding his/her SSMA experience. To help you with the registration process, a License Key Required dialog box opens the first time that you start the SSMA program.
