Overview

Now available for download, the Word 97 Template Security Patch addresses a vulnerability that would allow malicious code to be run in a Word 97 document without warning a user. Word 97 will warn users when opening a document that contains macros. However, if that document does not contain macros, but is linked to a template that does contain macros, no warning is issued. A hacker could exploit this vulnerability by causing malicious code to be run without warning when a user visits a Web site or opens an e-mail. This malicious code could be used to damage or retrieve data on a user's system.


The Word 97 Template Security Patch prevents a hacker from exploiting this vulnerability. After installing the patch, users will be warned before they launch a template that contains a macro. Installing the patch will not disable the use of templates or macros on templates. Note Before installing this patch you must update your system with Office 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2) if you have not already done so. Otherwise, if you install this patch now and then install Office 97 SR-2 at a later date you will have to reinstall this patch.

To install this download

  1. You may want to print this page to use as a reference when you are offline.
  2. Ensure that you have installed Office 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2). To confirm this, open an Office program and then click the About Microsoft command on the Help menu. You should see Microsoft 97 SR-2 as your version of the application.
  3. Download the file from this page by clicking the Download link above and following the instructions in the dialog boxes.
  4. Double-click the Wd97sp.exe program file on your hard disk to start the Setup program.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

Instructions for use:

Once you have gone through the installation process, simply use Word as usual.
