Overview
As Simple As Possible, But No Simpler
(SD_Process-Guckenheimer-Keynote.ppt)
Microsoft has been harvesting effective software lifecycle practices and tools from its own engineering teams, the agile community and the formal process world into Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) and Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF). MSF assumes a highly interactive, agile team relationship among design, development and testing. VSTS allows the process to be enacted directly with the tooling. This talk will survey these practices and tools, including:
User understanding, storyboarding, usability design and testing
Security requirements elicitation, design, implementation and testing
Performance design, implementation and testing
Project management, including team organization, requirements definition, bug management, and balanced scorecards
The talk uses examples from running projects, illustrate automation with tooling, cover relationships to other processes, and provide techniques that can be taken home and applied immediately.
Designing For User Experience
(EuroSP3-Guckenheimer-User_Centered_Design.ppt)
This session is an experience report on the design of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System. The discussion will cover the use of ethnographic research, contextual interviews, team personas, scenarios, storyboards, and usability labs over a two-year product cycle. Topics will include:
How did the focus on user experience influence product architecture and design?
What were the issues across a geographically and organizationally distributed team?
How did the team work within a constrained, existing product line?
What techniques were useful at which stages of the lifecycle and how did they change over the lifecycle?
How were tasks and responsibilities distributed across the team?
How were customers engaged in the process?
The talk shows examples of artifacts used, design decisions made, lessons learned and practices harvested.
