Overview

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Tools for Visual Studio 2005 software updates the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 SP1 smart device development components with the design time environment for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition). The download should be installed after the following conditions are fulfilled:

  • Download the licensing file for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Tools for Visual Studio 2005 and read through the terms of the license. You must accept the licensing terms before you download the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Tools for Visual Studio 2005. The licensing file will be also available in the path %Program Files%\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SmartDevices\SDK\SQL Server after the installation of the patch

  • The Smart Device Development components are installed during the installation of the Visual Studio 2005.

  • Visual Studio 2005 has been updated to Visual Studio 2005 SP1


The Smart Device Development components can be installed from the Visual Studio 2005 media (CD, DVD etc.) before or after updating the Visual Studio 2005 to Visual Studio 2005 SP1. If Visual Studio 2005 SP1 has been applied to Visual Studio 2005 and the smart device development components were not installed, the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Tools for Visual Studio 2005 will not install. To install the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Tools for Visual Studio 2005 install the Smart Device Development components from the Visual Studio 2005 media to the Visual Studio 2005 SP1 and then apply the download. The localized versions of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Tools for Visual Studio 2005 SP1 are installed as shown below:

  • Install the English version of the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Tools for Visual Studio 2005 (SSCE31VSTools-ENU.exe).

  • After the installation of the English version of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Tools for Visual Studio 2005 install the language pack for e.g. install SSCE31VSTools-ITA.exe for the Italian language


After the installation of the download, install the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition runtime for desktop and tablet PC from SQL Server 2005 Compact runtime for desktop and tablet PC

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition is designed for developers who need light weight, in process relational database solution for their applications that can be developed and deployed on desktop as well as on mobile devices. SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition runtime can be used to develop and deploy applications on desktop and tablet PC.

SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition is a powerful, yet lightweight relational database engine that makes it easy to develop desktop applications by supporting familiar Structured Query Language (SQL) syntax and providing a development model and API consistent with SQL Server. System Requirements

  • Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Professional Edition ; Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows Server 2003 R2 Datacenter Edition (32-Bit x86); Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition (32-Bit x86); Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition (32-bit x86); Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1; Windows Vista; Windows XP Home Edition N; Windows XP Media Center Edition; Windows XP Service Pack 2; Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

  • 30 MB of available hard disk space. (An additional 30 MB of space must be also available for temporary setup files.)
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 with the Smart Device Development components installed and Visual Studio 2005 updated to Visual Studio 2005 SP1
  • For installing the localized version of the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Tools for Visual Studio 2005 first install the English version of the patch (SSCE31VSTools-ENU.exe) and then install the localized version (for e.g. SSCE31VSTools-JPN.exe for the Japanese language).

SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition runtime for desktop and tablet PC, includes a Microsoft Windows Installer (.msi) file. The .msi file installs redistributable components to a specific location on the destination computer. To ensure serviceability and technical support, use the .msi file to deliver software components. Please see Redist.txt included in the package for component information.

SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition can be installed by running the installer - SQLServerCE31-EN.msi. Installing SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition by running SQLServerCE31-EN.msi installs the provider (System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll) in the GAC (global assembly cache) and registers the OLEDB provider (sqlceoledb30.dll). Doing this ensures that the components can be serviced in future by Microsoft Update. Administrator privileges are required on the machine for installing SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition. Independent Software Vendors and application developers redistributing SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition components or DLL’s as part of their application will need to take care of the serviceability of SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition components. Microsoft Update can only service SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition components that are deployed by using the installer - SQLServerCE31-EN.msi.
